53rd Mechanized Brigade is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
The brigade was formed in the fall of 2014, following the beginning of hostilities in southern and eastern Ukraine earlier that year, to reinforce the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ combat capabilities. It integrated several territorial defense battalions that were created earlier in the year, alongside personnel from several other brigades, to help speed up its formation.
Towards the end of the year, it had begun fighting in Luhansk Oblast, and in the following year, had begun to defend the crucial city of Avdiivka, situated to the west of the separatist-held city of Donetsk.
In 2016, the brigade absorbed two competent units, the legendary Aidar Battalion and the 43rd Motorized Battalion. In the following year, it maintained positions mostly on the Svitlodar Axis, before being pulled from the frontline later that year to be rotated. It would later return to the front in 2018 and would defend the Siversky Donets River and later the Horlivka sector in 2019.
Following the withdrawal of the brigade in October 2019, the brigade would receive its honorary title in May 2020 by Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, being called the Volodymyr Monomakh Brigade.
At the onset of the full-scale invasion, the unit was immediately deployed and defended Volnovakha, later being forced to withdraw to Vuhledar situated in southern Ukraine by March 2022. In June 2022, the brigade liberated the village of Pavlivka east of the city.
Due to the situation deteriorating around the city of Avdiivka in late 2023, the brigade returned to the city it had fought in almost a decade ago, and engaged advancing Russian forces in the southern sector of the city. It would later undergo fighting from August 2024 in New York, Donetsk Oblast, before being withdrawn and reorganized, with Oleksandr Sak appointed as the new commander. The famous Signum Drone Battalion was later integrated into the brigade.
In August 2025, it was confirmed that the brigade had joined the newly established 3rd Army Corps, formed on the basis of the 3rd Assault Brigade. Since then, like other brigades, it has likely seen integration of experienced personnel from the 3rd Assault Brigade, being soldiers and officers, to help bring the brigade up to scratch with the corps’ standards.
Insignia
The insignia features a pointed chevron in dark blue and golden yellow tones, in theme with the core brigade of the corps. Its core consists of a stylized crest believed to belong to Vsevolod Yaroslavych, from what appears to be a stylized variant of the national Tryzub symbol in Ukraine.
