49th Assault Battalion is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
It was originally formed as the Carpathian Sich Detachment by Oleh Kutsyn in June 2014. The unit was deployed to Pisky in 2014 and remained deployed in the village until 2016.
During the defense of the Pisky settlement and the battles for Donetsk Airport, the detachment made close ties with the 93rd Mechanized Brigade, also defending the area. It joined the ranks of the brigade in 2015, becoming Assault Company “Carpathian Sich”. All soldiers signed a contract with the Ukrainian military, and the unit became a legal formation.
After the withdrawal of the 93rd Mechanized Brigade from the frontline in 2016, the Carpathian Sich Assault Company was disbanded without informing its members, claiming that an independent formation cannot be part of regular army units. All unit members wrote a letter of resignation instead of joining other units.
On February 24, 2022, when Russian Forces launched a full-scale invasion of the country, the battalion was once again reformed. On May 19, 2022, the unit joined the Ukrainian Ground Forces as the 49th Rifle Battalion.
With the International Legions at the time only recruiting volunteers with prior military or combat experience, many foreigners joined the battalion in an attempt to help defend the country.
On June 19, 2022, the founder and commander of the battalion, Oleh Kutsyn, was killed near the city of Izyum. In 2023, the battalion was reformed into an assault battalion.
In April 2025, the German Volunteer Corps joined the battalion, and a 5th Sotnya also began formation, recruiting foreign volunteers into the unit’s ranks. In December 2025, the German Volunteer Corps left the unit to join the 60th Mechanized Brigade of the 3rd Army Corps.
