About Unit

24th Assault Regiment “Aidar” is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.

It was formed in May 2014 following the outbreak of conflict in eastern Ukraine, being formed as the 24th Territorial Defense Battalion. The unit was formed on the basis of Euromaidan self-defense volunteers and others willing to defend their country.

In September 2014, the battalion was reformed into an assault battalion, becoming the 24th Assault Battalion.

On November 3, 2015, it was announced that the unit would be reformed under the command of the 10th Mountain Brigade. Some time after, in 2016, the battalion was reformed once again and became a contingent of the 53rd Mechanized Brigade.

Following the full-scale invasion, in late 2022, the battalion was finally transferred under the command of the newly formed 5th Assault Brigade and has since been participating in operations with the unit.

In August 2025, the battalion left the structure of the 5th Assault Brigade, most likely following the formation of the Assault Troops within the Ukrainian Armed Forces. In December 2025, the battalion was expanded to regiment size.

Insignia

The insignia depicts a chevron with a blue wave in the center of the insignia with yellow one either side, a reference to the Aidar River, which the unit was named after. The central symbol is a knife that denotes the battalion as an assault unit, signifying ferocity and lethality.
