24th Mechanized Brigade is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
The brigade traces its origins to 1918, during the Russian Civil War, and fought in many conflicts such as the Winter War, the Second World War, and remained in the structure of the Soviet Army until the dissolution of the Soviet Union in 1991. The unit, known as the 24th Motor Rifle Division in 1992, came under the control of the new independent Ukrainian state to where it was reformed as the 24th Mechanized Division.
Later, in 2003, similar to other Ukrainian units, it was downsized to the scale of a brigade, becoming the 24th Mechanized Brigade. The brigade would participate in peacekeeping missions in Kosovo, Iraq, and was involved in numerous exercises abroad.
At the beginning of the war in Donbas in early 2014, the brigade saw its first combat operation after many decades. As part of the military-wide removal of Soviet awards and honorifics, the unit saw its title changed to be replaced with King Daniel of Galicia, following the conflict.
The unit was involved in the liberation of Slovyansk, Kramatorsk, and later Lysychansk. At the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion on February 24, 2022, the brigade was deployed in the area of Popasna, Zolote, and Krymske. The brigade commander, Colonel Valery Hudz, was killed in action in Luhansk Oblast on March 12, 2022. The unit would later participate in the defense of Kherson Oblast after the withdrawal from Sievierodonetsk and Lysychansk, and participated in the Kherson counteroffensive. They also partook in the defense of Bakhmut and Soledar in 2023.
In July 2025, the unit officially joined the 11th Army Corps.
