Vemedi Battalion of Unmanned Systems is a linear unit of the 39th Coastal Defense Brigade.
It was initially established in as part of the Right Sector Ukrainian Volunteer Corps as the Vedmedi Assault Group. In 2015, during the split of Dmytro Yarosh from Right Sector and its paramilitary wing, the unit joined the Ukrainian Volunteer Army, which was also established by Yarosh.
At the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the unit was stationed in the port city of Mariupol in southeastern Ukraine. The unit would be attached to the command of the Azov Regiment throughout the defense of the city and would participate in the defense of the Azovstal Steel and Ironworks complex.
It was initially thought that the unit had been destroyed during the fighting; however, in 2023, the commander and several servicemen returned to Ukraine from Russian captivity, leading to the restoration of the unit’s combat capability.
Following their release, the group joined the 36th Marine Brigade of the Ukrainian Naval Forces and continued combat operations. They had begun to experiment further with unmanned systems technology as well as infantry operations. In March 2025, it was confirmed that the unit had been reassigned to the command of the newly formed 39th Coastal Defense Brigade.
In October 2025, the unit was expanded and ceased to exist as a separate formation, becoming the linear Battalion of Unmanned Systems within the brigade.
