About Unit

39th Coastal Defense Brigade is a unit of the Ukrainian Naval Forces.

The brigade was officially formed in March 2022, following the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, as the 126th Territorial Defense Brigade in Odesa, Odesa Oblast.

They defended the local areas against Russian air attacks and were deployed to hold positions near the border of Mykolaiv and Kherson Oblasts in July 2022.

In April 2024, the brigade was transferred to the Ukrainian Naval Forces under the command of the 30th Marine Corps. It would later be officially reformed in March 2025 into the Marine Corps as a coastal defense unit, becoming the 39th Coastal Defense Brigade.

In late October 2025, the Vedmedi Group, which had been temporarily assigned to the command of the brigade since March 2025, was expanded into a linear Unmanned Systems Battalion of the brigade.

Insignia

The insignia features a shield with the unique colors for the Ukrainian Marines. At its center lies a heart with a crossed saber and arrow above it, reflecting the coat of arms of the Black Sea Ataman.

Lieutenant Colonel

Andriy Moroz

He was the former Chief of Staff of the 40th Coastal Defence Brigade. Additionally, he also served as a representative of the military enlistment office, supporting the idea that Ukrainians who are entirely to a deferment from mobilization must be prepared to later serve in the Ukrainian Defense Forces. In 2025, he was appointed as the commander of the 39th Coastal Defence Brigade.
