About Unit

6th Special Purpose Battalion is a linear unit of the Azov Brigade.

The battalion was formed on the basis of personnel from the 1st Special Purpose Battalion of the brigade, including the 2nd Company, which entirely transferred to help prop up the battalion. Additionally, personnel from the former 3rd Special Purpose Battalion also helped to form the battalion, due to its disbandment coinciding with the time of the battalion’s formation.

These soldiers went to Kyiv to form the unit in mid-February 2024, with the finalization of the battalion’s formation being marked in May that same year, where it began its recruitment efforts. Arsen Dmytryk, call sign “Lemko”, was assigned as the commander of the battalion.

Since September 2024, the battalion has helped to conduct combat operations in eastern Ukraine, particularly in the New York and Toretsk areas, where it faced intense fighting against Russian Forces in the two cities.

Uniquely, the battalion also performed combat missions in the Pokrovsk direction, separate from the rest of the brigade’s line battalions, due to its high combat experience and professionalism, which it conducted sabotage and infantry operations against Russian Forces in the vicinity.

It has carried out many joint training operations of its fighters and non-commissioned officers alongside the 1st Special Purpose Battalion, given the fact that they both have a shared history.

In November 2024, the battalion’s commander, Arsen Dymytryk, was assigned as the Chief of Staff of the 1st Azov Corps of the Ukrainian National Guard. He was later replaced by Lev Pashko, known by the callsign “Horus”.

Following continued reformations within the Ukrainian National Guard and its two combat corps, Ihor Vovk, callsign “Kraft”, would later go on to replace Horus, becoming one of the youngest battalion commanders in the history of the Azov Brigade.

Insignia

The insignia follows brigade tradition with a pointed chevron. It features the word “Azov” at the top, the Roman numeral VI, and crossed spears at the bottom. Its design closely resembles that of the 1st Special Purpose Battalion, honoring the unit’s heritage.

Known by the callsign “Kraft”, he entered military training but chose the Azov Regiment in 2020, anticipating war with the Russian Federation. In the unit, he had friends already serving and strong leadership. During the Defense of Mariupol at the beginning of the full-scale invasion, he served as a squad leader, later conducting reconnaissance, assaults, and special tasks despite being wounded. He endured intense fighting and was eventually captured by Russian Forces, where he would survive the…
