About Unit

1st Special Purpose Battalion is a linear unit of the Azov Brigade.

The battalion was first formed around the time of the expansion of the Azov Regiment on November 11, 2014. It was initially formed as the 1st Mechanized Battalion; however, it was short of being a full battalion in strength.

The 1st and 3rd Companies of the former Azov Battalion were combined to form the 1st Mechanized Battalion of the regiment. It would go on to fight in the Shyrokyne operation and many other operations of the Azov Regiment throughout the War in Donbas.

In 2016, the battalion was reformed as the 1st Infantry Battalion of the Azov Regiment, and saw an additional company enter its ranks, lifting it up from two to three companies in strength.

At the onset of the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the unit was garrisoned at Yurivka, Donetsk Oblast, on the outskirts of the city of Mariupol. It was immediately deployed to the city to defend against the advancing Russian forces. It was encircled and made a last stand at the Azovstal complex in the city. It was defeated in the siege after the Ukrainian high command called for the surrender of the Mariupol garrison in the city.

Following the release of Azovstal defenders from the Azov Regiment and other Ukrainian units in September 2022, they began to rebuild the strength of the unit. After the Azov Regiment was expanded in January 2023 into the size of a brigade, the battalion became one of the first units to resume combat operations alongside the 2nd Special Purpose Battalion, while the 3rd Special Purpose Battalion began to form.

It fought in southern Ukraine in the Zaporizhzhia direction amidst the Ukrainian summer offensive towards Melitopol in 2023, and then was transferred later that year to the Kreminna sector, where it saw heavy fighting in the Serebryansky forest. It also completed combat operations in Terny in 2024.

In February 2024, the 2nd Company of the battalion and elements of the 3rd Company and the command were transferred to stand up a new battalion in the brigade, the 6th Special Purpose Battalion.

It would later be redeployed to the New York and Toretsk sectors in late 2024. It was the only battalion to begin accepting foreigners into the ranks of the Azov Brigade, where they performed combat missions in Terny throughout 2024. These foreigners would go on to form the basis of the 3rd International Battalion of the brigade on December 23, 2024.

In September 2025, some personnel of the battalion’s 3rd Company were to be sent to reinforce the Headquarters of the 3rd International Battalion of the brigade, with the former commander Yurii Chekh, call sign “Karl”, being replaced by Captain Pavlo Kurchenko, call sign “Kiel”.

Insignia

The insignia follows brigade tradition with a pointed chevron, featuring a central Roman numeral I and a simplified crossed rifle symbol denoting its infantry role. The top of the insignia bears the inscription “Azov”, to reflect the brigade it belongs to. The chevron is inspired by the previous flag standard of the 1st Infantry Battalion of the Azov Regiment prior to and during the first few months of the full-scale invasion.
