About Unit

23rd Mechanized Brigade is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. The brigade was formed in January 2023 as part of the expansion of the Ground Forces. Initially, it was based in Pokrovsk, Donetsk Oblast.

On June 4, 2023, while the brigade was not yet fully formed, it was deployed to Zaporizhzhia Oblast. As part of Ukraine’s summer counteroffensive, it took part in the liberation of Novodarivka. The 23rd Mechanized Brigade sustained casualties during the operation and lost several vehicles. The battle was later cited as an example of the consequences of insufficient reconnaissance and the challenges posed by evolving battlefield dynamics.

The brigade was subsequently withdrawn from the front and did not participate further in the offensive. In 2024, elements of the brigade were deployed to reinforce Ukrainian defensive positions north of Avdiivka, and later in the Chasiv Yar sector.

In 2025, as Russian forces advanced toward the vicinity of Pokrovsk, the brigade’s garrison was relocated to the city of Samar in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast.
