Change of Command in 47th Mechanized Brigade

The 47th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces has undergone another change of command. Colonel Yan Yatsishen, who had led the brigade since March 2024, has been dismissed from his position. The official reasons for his removal have not been disclosed.

The new commander is 26-year-old Hero of Ukraine, Maksym Danylchuk. Before this appointment, he served as Chief of Staff of the 30th Mechanized Brigade.

Who is Maksym Danylchuk?

Danylchuk was born in Zhytomyr Oblast in 1999 and graduated from the National Academy of the Ground Forces. He served as a company commander, later becoming chief of staff and commander of the 2nd Battalion of the 30th Mechanized Brigade. According to available information, thanks to his professionalism, a significant number of enemy personnel and equipment were destroyed, particularly during the defense of the northern area of Bakhmut in February 2023. On February 24, 2024, President Zelenskyy awarded Danylchuk the title of Hero of Ukraine.

Unfortunate fate of the brigade

Since its formation, the 47th Mechanized Brigade has faced numerous challenges. The unit was intended to be one of the spearheads of the southern Ukrainian offensive in 2023, but its M1 Abrams tanks did not arrive in Ukraine on time, and Leopard 2A6 tanks had to be reassigned to it at short notice. Later in 2023, the brigade commander, Oleksandr Sak, was removed due to the unit’s battlefield performance, and Oleksandr Pavliy was appointed in his place. He was accused of deploying rear-area troops as assault infantry, which led to a significant loss of the brigade’s combat potential. Pavliy was dismissed in January 2024 and replaced by Dmytro Ryumshin.

Ryumshin led the brigade during the defense of Avdiivka, where once again the Ukrainian high command questioned the unit’s performance. He was relieved of command in March 2024 and replaced by Yan Yatsyshen.

Thus, since its establishment in 2022, the brigade has already had five commanders. Despite being one of the best-equipped units in the Defense Forces—operating M2 Bradleys and M1 Abrams tanks—the 47th’s performance has repeatedly been called into question.

Hopefully, the young Maksym Danylchuk will bring a bright and promising future to the 47th Mechanized Brigade.

During medieval period, changing of horses in the middle of the battle ends up in disaster.

In some of the battles you mentioned, to the observer the 47th appeared as one of the most effective units in the area. For example, during the Battle of Avdiivka, where the Russians were long unable to push through into Stepove on the northern flank, due to the 47th actions.
To me, most criticisms of the 47th from High Command come as a surprise. Might there be something else at play here?
