Idiotic Orders and Losses: Magura Commander Resigns

Battalion commander of the 47th Separate Mechanized Brigade “Magura,” Oleksandr Shyrshyn, has submitted a resignation letter. The officer accused the command of assigning “idiotic tasks” and causing unjustified personnel losses. Shyrshyn made the statement on his Facebook.

“I’ve never received dumber tasks than those in the current direction. I’ll share the details someday, but the senseless loss of people and constant trembling before clueless generals leads nowhere but failure. All they’re capable of is issuing reprimands, launching investigations, and imposing disciplinary actions. They can all go to hell. The ‘political’ games and their evaluation of the real situation don’t match either reality or our actual capabilities. I’ve submitted the appropriate report and hope to be dismissed soon. Then I’ll be ready to share a few things with my journalist friends,” wrote the commander.

In his post, Shyrshyn also tagged the official page of the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, adding:

“I hope your children will also serve in the infantry and carry out your tasks.”

According to open source data, the 47th Mechanized Brigade has been carrying out combat missions in the Kursk region since October 2024. They are currently deployed in Sumy Oblast.

General Staff issues orders to battalions

Bohdan Krotevych, former Chief of Staff of the Azov Brigade, expressed support for Oleksandr’s stance on his Telegram channel. He also shed light on how the General Staff micromanages frontline units and shifts blame onto brigade commanders when operations fail.

The reality is this: almost 99.9% of the tasks given to battalions are direct orders from the General Staff. Which position to retake, which treeline to clear — completely populist, unjustified, unsupported, idiotic assault operations or missions that senselessly endanger personnel.

Why? So that one person can look like they’ve got everything under control in front of the President. In truth — nothing is under control. The Commander-in-Chief lives in his own world, where his main source of information is Hanna Maliar. God forbid it’s not military intelligence — though I doubt even that.

I support Oleksandr’s stance. Such a position is rare — but officers like him are the future of our army. Because they’re not about careerism — they’re about responsibility and honor.

Corroborating this grim assessment is the huge disparity in the number of casualties exchanged. Over the past seven months, Russia returned the bodies of 6,312 Ukrainian soldiers, while Ukraine handed over 417 Russian soldiers’ remains. In the most recent exchange (May 16) Russia returned the remains of 909 Ukrainian soldiers while Ukraine handed over the remains of only 34 Russian soldiers.

Is that from the same playbook that serbians are dogs?

During and after Ukraine’s 2023 summer offensive, three exchanges took place. The ratio was 2.3 to 1 in Ukraine’s favor. In the last three exchanges this year, the ratio was nearly 30 to 1 in Russia’s favor. It’s not just about ‘advancing troops’.

First i’d like to address the article: great work, concise and accurate. I really like how this site is organized.

However, your response is also flawed, like the original comment. Attacking does not always mean significantly higher losses. In fact, there are many instances where the opposite is true.

Tristan

There were a few cases when the attacking sides take fewer casualties (such as when the attackers have a massive technological advantage), but it is unlikely to be the case in this war. Twice a year, I estimate both Ukrainians and Russians losses from available sources. My last one is roughly 230 000 KIA Russians vs 100 000 Ukrainans.
