Ukrainian Faction in Squad: All Mistakes listed

The newest update to the game Squad, titled “The Trident Strike,” introduces a new faction — the Armed Forces of Ukraine. However, the faction contains several factual inaccuracies, which we will clarify in this article.

According to the patch notes published on the official Squad website, the update focuses on the circa 2022 era of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. Our list of factual errors and inconsistencies is based on that timeframe.

Units

The update includes a total of eight Ukrainian units. All of them existed in 2022, with one exception — the 11th Army Corps. Although the corps was originally formed in 2016 as the Reserve Corps, it was reorganized and renamed the 11th Army Corps in April 2024. The insignia displayed in the game was only introduced in 2023. Thus, this unit is not accurately represented in the game.

The remaining formations correspond to the 2022 era and are listed below.

Equipment

The faction also introduces several new vehicles: T-64BM2 6TD, BTR-4E, BMP-1TS, Bastion-01, MT-LB-ZU-23, Kozak-2M1, BRDM-2M1, Kraz truck, and reskinned variants of the Mi-8, BMP-1, BMP-2, MT-LB, and BRDM-2. This is where the update’s most significant inaccuracies appear.

The T-64BM2 6TD was operated only by the 92nd Assault Brigade (then the 92nd Mechanized Brigade) in 2022; that brigade is absent from the in-game unit selection. In 2022, the 92nd fielded two companies of these tanks, so including the platform without its historical operator creates a factual inconsistency.

Similarly, the BTR-4E was primarily operated by the 92nd Brigade in 2022, while most BTR-4 variants at the time were in service with the National Guard. Although the 58th Motorized Brigade operates a small number of BTR-4Es today, that was not the case in 2022.

Even rarer systems, such as the Bastion-01 and BMP-1TS, were not in use with regular Armed Forces of Ukraine frontline units in 2022. These platforms were confined to training centers; when the full-scale invasion began, they were removed from training stocks and handed over to the first units that arrived — not fielded as standard equipment by combat brigades.

Conversely, several common vehicles that were widespread in 2022 are missing from the faction. The T-64BV, one of the most common tanks in Ukrainian service, does not appear in the game. The BTR-3 — used by units such as the 95th Air Assault Brigade, which is featured in the update — is also absent.

The other units included in the faction — the 10th Mountain Assault Brigade, 28th Mechanized Brigade, 58th Motorized Brigade, 148th Artillery Brigade, and 35th Marine Brigade — primarily used Soviet-era equipment and Ukrainian MRAPs, such as the Kozak-2, during the 2022 period. These are represented more accurately in the update.
