Assault Infantry
48th Assault Battalion is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
The unit was originally formed in September 2016, primarily by Crimean Tatars and Ukrainian volunteers, after the annexation of Crimea.
The battalion was named after Noman Chelebidzhikhan, a prominent Crimean Tatar religious and political figure. However, the formation was short-lived and ultimately disbanded by the end of the year.
Following the start of Russia’s full-scale invasion of Ukraine on February 24, 2022, many of the battalion’s former members returned to service within the Ukrainian Defense Forces.
In February 2022, the unit was reconstituted, drawing its personnel partially from the 251st Territorial Defense Battalion of the 241st Territorial Defense Brigade. Its core continued to consist of Crimean Tatar and southern Ukrainian volunteers, and became a Fire Support Company.
In 2023, the unit was expanded into an assault battalion, seeing combat across many hot directions, including Kyiv Oblast, Sumy, Kharkiv, Zaporizhzhia, and the Battle of Bakhmut.
In late 2024, the battalion was transferred into the ranks of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
In early 2025, the unit experienced internal turmoil, with public appeals from soldiers calling for the reinstatement of their commander. Lenur Islyamov was not only the commander but also the founder of the battalion, having personally recruited 90% of its servicemen, all of whom voluntarily joined the unit.
Eventually, a significant portion of its core personnel reportedly left to join the 426th Rifle Battalion. In August 2025, the battalion became part of the Assault Troops.
Insignia
The insignia displays a chevron divided diagonally into two fields: black in the upper left and a pastel orange in the lower right, with a subdued olive green border. At its center are two mirrored animal heads, one light, one dark, facing each other in profile, with their jaws open, meeting at the division of the shield. Between them are stylized lightning bolts, emphasizing speed and aggression.
