42nd Rifle Battalion is a rifle battalion of the Ground Forces. The unit was formed in April 2022, shortly after the Russian full-scale invasion in 2022. The battalion entered the combat zone on August 7, in the vicinity of Pisky, Vodyane and Nevelske in Donetsk Oblast.
The unit consisted mostly of mobilized servicemen, and was initially tasked with reinforcing frontline units and holding its flanks.
