Interesting that the guy who ran the counteroffensive in the south got promoted when the US media is screaming about the thing being a debacle.

Ukraine avoided a huge disaster by ignoring the advice of the US. WaPo article made it pretty clear that the US officer corps does not understand this kind of warfare. They’d have pulled Kassereine 2.0. Ukraine held back, so still has reserves.

It’s not that they dont’t understand the war, it’s that they probebly don’t understand the limitations of Ukraine. NATO would not have attacked if it was in the same situation Ukraine was/is in. The ATACMS strike on the helicopters in Berdyansk, that would have happend before the first attack not months after. NATO would not have attack without air superiority.

Andrew

Exactly. NATO would never attack at all – unless politicians made it, for show. Because lasting air superiority is a myth. An excuse to not have to fight if the risks are too high. Part of why Article 5 only compels a member to respond and doesn’t specify how or with what force. Politics prevails.

Stefano

The question is how is it that they don’t understand the limitations of Ukraine? Did they expect Ukraine to have air superiority? Do they realise the Russians have stolen Donbas, which is the engine of the Ukrainian economy?

Ukrainer

No, “donbas” is not the engine of the Ukrainian economy, and it never was. This is another lie of russian propaganda. This is one of the most subsidized regions. The share of the GDP of these regions in 2013 to the entire country was 15%.

Either way it’s an important economic region with a lot of resources. You think 15% is irrelevant?

Stefano

The GDP per capita in Donetsk oblast was only behind Kyiv,Dnipro and Poltava in 2013. It was almost double of that of Lviv and Ivano-Frankivsk.

Ukraine is also unable to attack with multiple brigades at the same time. NATO would have started with several divisions. What the us officers probebly didn’t understand is the drone situation.

Kay

The USA had already used drones in Iraq… But in a different way… The Americans send state-of-the-art, expensive drones to bomb enemy positions without the risk of their own losses.
UAF use simple, standard drones in addition to reconnaissance and as a fire control system. For the Americans, this is like a revolution of war.

I know a guy from the 65th mech who is doing training with/in the 10th army corps, training will take a couple months. Do you think a new commander has anything to do with lots of new training?

Andrew

Here’s hoping that Ukraine is promoting all the mid-level officers who performed well. Helps that now Ukraine knows more about what exactly to train for.

Just trying to connect the dots. It seems like in late fall 2023 a lot of the 9th and 10th corps units were pulled back for refitting and their officers and NCOs split up to help form the 5 new mechanized brigades that Ukraine is forming for 2024. So there’s a lot of training going on.

Though it seems like a few brigades (notably the 47th Mech) have been sent to Avdiivka.
