New tank unit appeared in the Ground Forces

A new unit, the 29th Tank Battalion, has been established within the structure of the Ground Forces of Ukraine. Currently in the formation stage, it becomes the second active separate tank battalion in service, following the 12th Tank Battalion, which has been operational since its formation in 2019. The 29th Tank Battalion has already received its own insignia, although it remains unclear whether it has been officially approved.
The formation of this separate tank battalion is likely tied to the Ukrainian Army’s ongoing transition to a corps-based structure. Currently, Ukraine fields three tank brigades — the 1st, 3rd, and 4th — which, aside from the first month of the full-scale invasion in 2022, have never operated as cohesive brigade-level units. Instead, their battalions were dispersed across the country, functioning more as independent elements than as parts of a unified formation.
There are rumors that, due to a shortage of tanks and the operational realities of the war, tank battalions within mechanized, motorized, and mountain brigades will be reduced in size. Meanwhile, the existing tank brigades may be disbanded, with each newly formed army corps receiving a separate tank battalion under its direct command.
