Oleksandr “Staff” Sak began his service in the 93rd Mechanized Brigade during the ATO period as a platoon commander, progressing to company up to 3rd battalion commander, with each step earned through real combat experience.
In November 2022 he took command of newly created 47th Mechanized Brigade, leading it in the difficult times when it operated as one of the spearheads of the Ukrainian counteroffensive in the South. In September 2023, following the failed offensive in Zaporizhzhia Oblast, the brigade’s poor battlefield performance and internal issues within the command staff, Oleksandr Sak was removed from his position as commander.
In November 2024 Sak was promoted to the rank of Colonel and was appointed commander of the 53rd Mechanized Brigade. After only six months, in May 2025, he took the lead of the reorganized 59th Assault Brigade, which currently leads on the Pokrovsk front, in april 2026, when the famous Signum Unmanned Systems Battalion transferred from the 53rd Brigade to the 59th Brigade, likely following the desire to reconnect with its former commander.
Colonel Sak holds all three classes of the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytskyi — a rare distinction reflecting that each award was earned through real operations, decisions, and risks taken personally and responsibly.
