About Unit

Special Operations Center West, commonly known as the 8th Special Purpose Regiment, is a specialized unit within the Ukrainian Special Operations Forces. The unit was formed as 8th Special Purpose Brigade on the basis of unit of the same name of Soviet Army in 1992. In September 2003, the staff size was reduced to a regiment.

In 2014, soldiers of the regiment defended Donetsk, Luhansk and Kramatorsk airports, and also conducted operations behind enemy lines and acted as SAR element. On January 5, 2016, the Special Operations Forces were established as a separate branch of the Ukrainian military, and the 8th Regiment was integrated into this newly formed command.

In 2019, 8th Special Purpose Regiment was reformed as Special Operations Center West.
