Public Order Units
25th Brigade of Public Order Protection is a unit of the Ukrainian National Guard.
The unit was formed in January 1992 under the designation of the 2nd Regiment of the Ukrainian National Guard, on the basis of a former Soviet Internal Troops unit. It was assigned to the 1st Kyiv Division of the Ukrainian National Guard
In January 1995, it was transferred to the Internal Troops of the Ministry of Internal Affairs. It was also renamed the 10th Special Motorized Regiment, performing patrol, security, and public-order duties in the city of Kyiv and other areas.
In 2003, the regiment was reorganized into the 25th Special Motorized Brigade and took part in major national security operations, including the Orange Revolution, and more.
During the Revolution of Dignity, the unit suffered several casualties. Later that year, it was reformed into the 25th Brigade of Public Order Protection as part of the newly formed Ukrainian National Guard, formed following Euromaidan, to maintain order. At the outbreak of hostilities in Donbas, the unit helped to clamp down on pro-separatist sentiment in Kharkiv city and Kharkiv Oblast in eastern Ukraine, preventing the spread of local separatism.
In October 2021, the Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy awarded the brigade the honorary title “Prince Askold”.
Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, the unit has safeguarded many cities across the country. It also partially engages in combat operations with its Askar Platoon.
