Fraykor Volunteer Unit is an independent, military-patriotic organization that fights alongside the Ukrainian Armed Forces.
The unit was founded by Heorhij Tarasenko, a former member of the National Political Party that was led by Andriy Biletskyi, the founder of the Azov Battalion. The organization “Fraykor”, also commonly known as “Freikorps”, describes itself as defending traditional values and retaining political views in line with the National Corps.
They sent their first soldiers to the frontline on July 13, 2017, marking the beginning of their combat path. The unit has already gone through seven rotations, participating in hostilities in the Donetsk, Mariupol, and Kharkiv directions, spending 22 months there. It operates under a closed structure where the soldiers are members of the public organization, only to safeguard its principles. The Fraykor organization was publicly listed in Kharkiv on March 19, 2018, with Tarasenko listed as its founder.
Following the beginning of the full-scale invasion by Russia on February 24, 2022, the unit was fully committed to defending the city of Kharkiv and Kharkiv Oblast and was mobilized immediately. They, alongside other Ukrainian units in the city at the time, participated in retaking School No. 134, where one Russian company was pinned down after Russian Special Forces had broken through to the center of the city.
Amidst the fighting in Kharkiv Oblast, the unit would lose its commander, Tarasenko, in hostilities against Russian forces on March 26, 2022. The unit has had a heavy presence in the fighting ongoing in eastern Kharkiv, helping to defend the city of Kupyansk after it had been liberated in September 2022.
Amidst the situation in Kupyansk in December 2025, the unit participated in stabilization operations, which commenced under the coordination of the Joint Forces Task Force, the Tactical Group Kupyansk, and the 2nd Khartia Corps.
Insignia
The insignia features a chevron that is similar in appearance to the one used by the legendary Azov Regiment since 2015. Its central features include a unique and stylized Idea of the Nation symbol inside a diamond, a symbol commonly associated with Ukrainian nationalism. On either side of the symbol are two daggers facing down, with a Ukrainian Tryzub present below the diamond. The peak of the insignia reads out the unit’s full name in Cyrillic writing.
