About Unit

63rd Mechanized Brigade is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. The brigade was formed on the basis of a joint directive of the Ministry of Defense and the General Staff dated March 14, 2017. The unit was formed from servicemen of the units of Operational Command West. The day of the unit’s creation is considered July 23, 2017.

In October 2017, the brigade underwent combat coordination at the Rivne training ground.

In October 2019 of that year, the brigade was deployed to the combat zone in eastern Ukraine. In September, the brigade took part in strategic command staff exercise “Cossack Will”, being the main unit involved.

The brigade was deployed immediately at the beginning of the Russian full-scale invasion, with the brigade engaging Russian Forces in Kherson and Mykolaiv Oblasts, fighting for the right bank of the Dnieper River. In November 2022, after the success of the Kharkiv offensive and the ongoing Kherson offensive at the time, they helped to liberate the city of Kherson.

On December 15, 2022, the Ukrainian General Staff redeployed to the brigade to fight in the city of Bakhmut, which began to see heavy fighting against regular Russian Forces and mercenaries from the Wagner Group.

Since 2024, the brigade has been operating in Luhansk Oblast, defending positions to the west of Kreminna in the region.

In March 2025, the brigade received BTR-4 vehicles, becoming the fourth unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces to receive these types of vehicles, alongside the 56th and 58th Motorized Brigade, and the 92nd Assault Brigade.

In August 2025, it was confirmed that the brigade had joined the newly established 3rd Army Corps. That same month, the brigade underwent reorganization, likely at the initiative of the corps’ headquarters, seeing the disbandment of the separate battalions under its command, and being formed as linear units inside of the brigade to streamline the command, recruitment, management, and other procedures within the brigade.

Insignia

The insignia depicts a stylized chevron divided vertically into two fields, red on the left, and black on the right, bordered in grey. The central symbology is a stylized grey lion’s head in profile, facing left, with an open mouth and fangs. At the lower portion of the shield is the inscription of the brigade’s numerical designation, composed of four vertical white bars, partially bound by two horizontal red lines.
