About Unit

The 228th Territorial Defense Battalion is a unit under the 127th Territorial Defense Brigade, based in Kharkiv. It was formed in March 2022, right after the full-scale invasion started, mostly made up of local volunteers who wanted to defend their city.

Since then, the battalion’s been through some intense battles, defending Kharkiv in the early days, pushing Russian forces out of nearby towns like Ruska Lozova, later on, they were also active in Bakhmut. And as of 2025 the battalion was carrying out tasks in the Kharkiv Region.

In July 2025 with the 127th Territorial Defense Brigade being reorganized into a Heavy Mechanized Brigade the battalion was reorganized into 2nd mechanized battalion of the brigade and ceased to exist as a separate unit.
