Formed on February 24, 2022, as a separate special purpose company of Ukrainian National Guard. The unit was later reassigned to Main Intelligence Directorate and was expanded to a consolidated detachment.
On April 6, 2023, the unit was reformed as 78th Special Purpose Regiment of Ukrainian Air Assault Forces (source) and in August 2023 as 78th Assault Regiment.
