The Final Tank Brigade is Reformed
The last tank brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, the 4th Tank Brigade named after Hetman Ivan Vyhovskyi, is being reformed into the 4th Heavy Mechanized Brigade, meaning it is losing one of its tank battalions and will follow the structure of two tank, two mechanized, and two rifle battalions.
This was officially announced on the brigade’s official Facebook page, confirming that they have been reformed into this new type of formation.
MilitaryLand has continued to cover the reformation of Tank and Territorial Defense Brigades in recent months, with it being anticipated in our report about the 3rd Tank Brigade’s reformation that the 4th Tank Brigade’s reform was already underway.
This transformation marks the end of the era of tank brigades in the Armed Forces of Ukraine. As of now, there are no tank brigades remaining within the Defense Forces.

So do Tank troops of Ground forces still remain as a branch? Do new heavy mechanized brigades refer to Mechanized troops or to Tank troops? What about 12th and 29th tank battalions?
Tank Troops remain their own type of troops. The heavy mechanized brigade’s contain a hybrid of mechanised and tank troop types.
It remains to be seen when chevrons they will wear.
The epic battle for Chasov Yar appears to be largely over, though pockets of resistance may remain. Perched on the elevated hills of the Donets Ridge, this strategic town is set to become a key staging point for a Russian push toward Kramatorsk and Sloviansk in the coming year. As a side note, Russian territorial gains in July totalled 564 square kilometers.
First, it is called Chassiv Yar. And the frontline has barely moved in the area for about a year. Don’t you remember the Russian trolls who were claiming the town would fall in May 2024 ?
