International Legion Training Unit Reformed

The 4th International Legion, formerly the training battalion for the International Legion for the Defence of Ukraine, has officially been reorganized into a full-on international training center as part of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.

About the Battalion

The 4th International Legion, also commonly known as the 4th Training Battalion of the International Legion, began to form back in the first half of 2023, following the Kharkiv offensive, where operational units of the International Legion had participated in battles around Kupyansk alongside the 92nd Mechanized Brigade and other areas in Kharkiv Oblast. It was the fourth unit to be created within the umbrella known as the International Legion under the Ukrainian Ground Forces.

Foreign recruits who arrived at the battalion would undergo training for several weeks and would later be sent to one of three line battalions within the sphere of the International Legion, being 1st, 2nd Infantry Battalions, and 3rd Special Purpose Battalion. It recruited and trained people from all across the world; however, in recent months, recruits are commonly drawn from countries in South America, including Colombia and Brazil.

Reformation of the Battalion

In recent months, rumours regarding the disbandment of the International Legion have circulated on social media, though no verifiable evidence has supported any claims of major restructuring. This includes the new direction of the Legion’s former training battalion. Since September 2025, the unit has maintained a low profile on its official Instagram account, pausing public activity and recruitment.

Later in November 2025, the battalion’s official Instagram revealed that it had been reformed, now going by the designation of the 157th International Training Center of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. It remains unclear as to how this change will affect the broader structure of the International Legion, or whether the new center will continue preparing recruits solely for the Legion or for a wider range of units in the Ground Forces.

As part of the battalion’s reformation, it has also received its own unique insignia. The insignia first appears on MilitaryLand in a redrawn, high-quality rendition, redrawn by Davomme.

The insignia features a typical chevron with a yellow border and a green canvas. The central imagery depicts a stylized spartan helmet shaped in a trident, a homage to the national symbol of Ukraine – the Tyrzub.

This development comes shortly after the 2nd International Legion was observed operating under the 16th Army Corps, reflecting the continued necessity of Ukraine recruiting foreign volunteers into its ranks.
