48th Rifle Battalion Reorganized into Reconnaissance Unit

The 48th Rifle Battalion of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, which had been attached to the 72nd Mechanized Brigade for most of its existence since its formation in 2022, has been reorganized into a reconnaissance battalion. The announcement was made on the unit’s official page.
The primary missions of the newly designated 48th Reconnaissance Battalion include intelligence gathering, enemy surveillance and analysis to support command decision-making, as well as executing swift and unexpected strikes against enemy targets.
“War is a dynamic process that constantly adapts to the surrounding world. Over time, it evolves, adjusting to new technologies, strategies, and conditions. This means that tactics, weaponry, and—above all—the military itself can and must change. As of today, the 48th Separate Rifle Battalion has changed its name and role due to a shift toward new combat missions, and has thus become the 48th Separate Reconnaissance Battalion,” says the announcement.
With its reorganization, the battalion is no longer part of the 72nd Mechanized Brigade and will likely be reassigned to one of Ukraine’s newly formed army corps.
