158th Mechanized Brigade Undergoing Training in Poland
In May 2024, our site reported the formation of several new brigades in the Ukrainian Ground Forces which came to fruition due to legislation lowering the minimum conscription age from 27 to 25. The army formed the 156th, 157th, 158th, and 159th infantry brigades, which over time – have slowly become mechanized.
In November 2024, we also reported that the 158th Infantry Brigade had been redesignated as the 158th Mechanized Brigade. It is unknown whether the brigade has the equipment to fulfil its intended purpose as being a mechanized brigade, but it possibly indicates that training and equipment are provided elsewhere abroad, similar to the 155th Mechanized Brigade.
Recently, it has been confirmed that the 158th Mechanized Brigade is undergoing training and receiving assistance from the Polish military, as stated on the brigade’s official Facebook page. The training is being conducted by Poland’s 11th “Lubuska” Armored Cavalry Division. While it remains unclear whether the brigade will receive vehicles or additional equipment from Poland, it is confirmed that Polish forces are playing a significant role in preparing the brigade for future operations. This mirrors the support provided by the French military to the 155th Mechanized Brigade in their training initiatives.
We will likely see more brigades being equipped and trained abroad to improve their capabilities, enhance their operational effectiveness, and ensure greater success on the battlefield, especially as they prepare to become fully combat-ready by 2025.
