Another coastal defense brigade has been formed
On 30 December 2024, we reported that the Ukrainian Navy had formed the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade; which was allegedly formed based on the existing 150th Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. This marked the first creation of a coastal defense brigade since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.
Recently, open-source information has shown that another coastal defense unit has appeared – the 34th Coastal Defense Brigade. The unit also appears to have received an insignia, which shows a crab with red eyes alongside the traditional Marine Corps chevron style.
It has been reported – although unconfirmed, that the brigade was formed on the basis of the 124th Territorial Defense Brigade. We reported on 22 June 2024 that the brigade joined the Marine Corps, being the second territorial defense unit to do so. It is expected that the 126th Territorial Defense Brigade will also be reformed into a coastal defense brigade in the near future.

looks like number 39 was left out, could be the 3rd Coastal Defense Brigade
According to information on the net, the 126th Territorial Defense Brigade (it’s mentioned in this article) will be converted to the 39th Coastal Defense Brigade, and it will be the third Coastal Defense Brigade.
We are waiting for confirmation.
Jerome, what’s a coastal defense brigade? And did this happen before the president put a hold on new units until existing units were brought to full strength?
Thanks
Excellent question
These, essentially, are not new units, just a rebranding of the already existing ones. I suppose they will change the structure to something resembling motorized/mechanized brigades, maybe with some marine focus aka some river boat units or specialized divers, but the ‘core’ of the brigade would remain the same.
Basically a mix of marine and mechanized brigade.
Could they just stay like territorial brigades (just infantry) with little to no armored vehicles?
Thanks Jerome. The name’s a bit of a red herring, since it sounds like they sit around waiting for an amphibs invasion!
