The division was formed in 2018 in order to be able to defend the Azov Sea. There were many compilations in delivering the ships to its new location, since russia occupied the Kerch Strait. Some ships were captured by the russians during the transfer and later returned, but only after a lot of equipment was stolen. Ithers had to be transported over the land. At the beginning of the full-scale invasion 2022 the ports of Berdyansk and Mariupol were occupied and all ships of the division were either captured or destroyed, which meant the division was disbanded.
