3rd Regiment of Key Facilities Protection was a unit of the Internal Troops of Ukraine. The regiment was responsible for protecting the Donetsk State Chemical Products Plant.
In June 2014, following the seizure of government buildings in Donetsk by Russian forces, armed militants arrived at the regiment’s headquarters and demanded its surrender. After negotiations with the militants, the regiment’s commander ordered personnel to lay down their arms, reportedly to avoid bloodshed and preserve the lives of the servicemen. A Russian flag was raised over the regiment’s headquarters later the same day, marking the unit’s loss of control over its base.
The enemy seized over 2 thousand assault rifles, four BTR-70 armored personnel carriers and two BRDM-2 vehicles. The commander was later arrested, and sentenced to 3 years in prison.
