About Unit

52nd Mechanized Brigade was a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.

The unit traces its roots back to the Soviet Army’s 254th Mechanized Division, which was transferred from Hungary to Artemivsk, Donetsk Oblast – now more popularly known as Bakhmut.

Following Ukraine’s independence in 1992, the division’s personnel swore allegiance to Ukraine and became part of the Ukrainian Armed Forces.

The unit was subordinated to the 6th Army Corps, which would later form the Operational Command South in November 2013.

In 2001, the division was downsized and reformed as the 52nd Mechanized Brigade, alongside many other units of the Ukrainian military, which had been downsized in order to meet modern-day military needs.

In 2004, the unit was stood down and subsequently disbanded, with its personnel likely being redistributed into reserve formations or other units of the 6th Army Corps.
