Field Artillery
15th Artillery Reconnaissance Brigade is a unit of the Ukrainian Ground Forces.
Following the dissolution of the Soviet Union in August 1991, the 337th Rocket Artillery Brigade of the Soviet Army would become subordinate to the newly formed Ukrainian Armed Forces in December 1991, swearing allegiance to the Ukrainian People.
On August 20, 2003, the brigade was downsized and reformed as the 15th Rocket Artillery Regiment.
On May 4, 2006, the regiment was awarded its Battle Flag. Several years later, on August 21, 2008, the regiment received the title of “Drohobych”.
Following its reformation in 2003, the unit managed to be noted as being one of the most highly effective units within the Ukrainian Armed Forces, with it being recognized after its reformation that it was the best unit of the Operational Command West.
Additionally, in June 2012, the regiment’s personnel were regarded as being one of the most highly organized and physically fit units in training and sports within the military.
Since the beginning of hostilities in eastern Ukraine in April 2014, the brigade has participated in many battles in Donbas, particularly in Luhansk Oblast. In November 2015, like many other Ukrainians units, all Soviet awards and titles were stripped from the regiment.
Following the full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, the unit has worked extensively in many directions to provide artillery reconnaissance capabilities for the Ukrainian Ground Forces, participating in high-profile engagements such as the Kharkiv offensive.
On November 3, 2023, the brigade received its honorary title “Black Forest”.
Insignia
The insignia illustrates a chevron with a black canvas and a golden border. The core symbolism of the insignia depicts a golden eagle facing to the left of the chevron, grasping two oak leaves, and a shield on the chest of the eagle, bearing a red canvas and golden border – containing a stylized fleur-de-lis with a dagger. It symbolizes the lethality and scouting abilities possessed by a dagger and eagle.
