Due to the threat of a full-scale invasion, the time of formation of the units is currently being reduced.
Any citizen of Ukraine, under the age of 60, can sign up for service in territorial defense units. There is no longer needed a previous military service experience. Ukraine will also reduce the timeframe for the training and exercises to a minimum.
The military currently plans to form four regional HQ – in Dnipro, Chernihiv, Odesa and Rivne. The existing 25 territorial defense brigades will be reorganized. The number of battalions in each brigade should be newly adjusted according to the number of districts.
Territorial Defense Forces will consist of 10 000 permanently employed soldiers. Conscripts and reservists will fill the remaining floating strength.
Ukraine plans to fully establish all Territorial Defense units by January 15, 2022. You can check out our list of Territorial Defense Forces here. We’ll update it once we know the final new hierarchy.
