125th Brigade Transitions to Heavy Mechanized Role

Another Territorial Defense Brigade has been reformed into a Heavy Mechanized Brigade inside of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. We have recently reported on the 127th and 128th Territorial Defense Brigades being reformed, which makes it the third brigade of its type to undergo this transformation.

The brigade, alongside the 127th and 128th Brigades, was transferred to the command of the Ukrainian Ground Forces last year in late July 2024, which MilitaryLand reported. This reform was confirmed by the brigade changing its designation and posting about the reform on its official Facebook page. In addition to this new reform, the unit received a new insignia which is more in theme with the traditional chevrons of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, which has been redrawn by myself, Davomme, in higher quality and released for the first time on MilitaryLand.

New insignia of the 125th Heavy Mechanized Brigade, redrawn by Davomme.

The new insignia is more or less identical to its previous insignia. The new insignia contains a shield which is commonly used in the Ukrainian Ground Forces, with Territorial Defense Brigades commonly using a castle wall’s parapet at the peak of its design. In the center of the insignia is a Ruthenian lion, commonly associated with heraldry and culture in western Ukraine, and a castle gate behind it. Previously, the lion used to be placed between the castle’s gate, but has now been placed lower and has been enlarged. Furthermore, the castle gate color has changed from yellow to grey to contrast with the colors better

The unit, like other Heavy Mechanized Brigade formations, will follow the split of two tank, two mechanized, and two rifle battalions in its structure.
