Donetsk Airport: “Not One Step Back”

The platoon was initially based in Dnipropetrovsk Oblast. But already in October 2014, the volunteers took up positions in Pisky near Donetsk. Then came the Butivka mine, Vodiane, Opytne. And the Donetsk Airport — the very front line that would enter new Ukrainian memory as a symbol of steadfastness.

On May 23, 2015, right in the midst of combat operations, the fighters swore an oath of loyalty to the people of Ukraine. A symbolic moment: not in barracks, not on a parade ground — but in battle. Shortly thereafter, the platoon was expanded into the Separate Combined Assault Company “Karpatska Sich,” incorporated into the 93rd Separate Mechanized Brigade “Kholodnyi Yar.”

For nearly ten months, the company held the defense near the Donetsk Airport. Daily shelling, relentless positional combat, minimal supply. Losses were severe: seven killed, more than forty wounded. But not a single position was surrendered.

In December 2015, commander Oleh Kutsyn was wounded. After treatment — he returned to the front. Not managing from the rear, but standing alongside his brothers-in-arms. Always first, always at the front.

On April 13, 2016, the company was disbanded. Formally — due to the completion of its assigned tasks. But behind this lay something else as well: disagreements with the brigade’s command, a different vision of how the war should be fought. The idea of “Karpatska Sich,” however, did not die. The volunteers remained united — experienced, hardened, and ready to act again.

Return: Kyiv Oblast, February–March 2022

After demobilization, Oleh Kutsyn returned to Kyiv. He worked in municipal security. He headed the veterans’ organization “Legion of Freedom.” But everyone around him knew: if a new phase began — he would be among the first again.

And so it was. On February 24, 2022, russia launched its full-scale invasion. Kutsyn did not wait for orders. He had assembled his combat veterans in advance, developed a plan, and identified rally points. As soon as the first explosions rang out, volunteers began arriving from across the country — veterans of 2014–2016, new recruits, foreigners. Thus “Karpatska Sich” was reborn — now as a full-fledged combat unit.

By March 1, the unit numbered approximately one hundred fighters. The first combat direction was Kyiv Oblast. The battalion took up defensive positions on the approaches to the capital — in Romanivka, Irpin, Stoianka, on the Brovary and western axes. In Romanivka — trenches and firing positions right at the entrance to Kyiv. In the Irpin encirclement — defense from multiple directions to prevent the enemy from advancing deeper.

Equipment at the outset was minimal: rifles, a few machine guns, anti-tank weapons, some of it preserved from 2014. Volunteers helped with everything they could. When the Armed Forces of Ukraine became convinced of the unit’s combat capability, they began transferring initial supplies of weapons and equipment.

In Kyiv Oblast the battalion spent more than a month in continuous combat. The hottest points were Irpin, Romanivka, and Stoianka. Losses: three killed, more than forty wounded. But not a single position was surrendered. Against volunteers with rifles came tanks, aviation, and artillery.

A separate unit of the battalion carried out an airborne operation in the enemy’s rear. A group of forty fighters crossed the Kyiv Reservoir by boat to the left bank. They mined roads, blew up bridges, and destroyed enemy column vehicles. Partisans had appeared in the russian rear — and this unnerved the occupiers and destabilized their supply lines.

The culmination of the combat period in Kyiv Oblast was the liberation of Stoianka. Despite the absence of heavy equipment and with only one civilian quadcopter at their disposal, the unit managed to drive the enemy from the village. After this, the russians began retreating without stopping all the way to the belarusian border.

Eastward: The Izium Direction and the Death of the Commander

In the spring of 2022, after the liberation of Kyiv Oblast, command made the decision to redeploy “Karpatska Sich” to the east. The first destination was the village of Virnopillia on the Izium axis. A school was converted into a barracks, a neighboring house into a command post. On the very first day — an artillery strike. Then daily shelling and several tank assaults. All were repelled.

In Virnopillia, the battalion took its first prisoner. And from a captured russian T-72, repaired on the spot, the formation of the unit’s own tank element began.

On May 20, 2022, the unit officially received its status and designation — the 49th Separate Rifle Battalion “Karpatska Sich.” But weeks later came a blow no one could have foreseen. On June 19, 2022, during a routine enemy attack, battalion commander Oleh Kutsyn “Kum” was killed. The man who had stood at the unit’s founding, who had built this unit from scratch twice over. Despite the loss, the Sich fighters held Virnopillia and pressed forward.

In July, the Izium operation began. “Karpatska Sich” assaulted Dmytrivka and Brazhkivka, passed through Velyka and Mala Komyshuvacha, Korovyi Yar, Karpivka, and Nove. The russians retreated, leaving behind equipment and ammunition. Fighters repaired captured hardware on the spot and immediately put it to use. After crossing the Zherebets River, the battalion entrenched itself on the Torske salient.

On October 1, 2022, a small assault group drove the enemy from Terniv and established a foothold in the center of the village. From October 2022 to September 2023, “Karpatska Sich” held the sector between Virnopillia and Terniv without rotation. Daily shelling, attempted breakthroughs, lack of cover — but the positions held.

Assault Battalion: Makiivka, Kupyansk, Ocheretyne

In September 2023, the battalion was temporarily subordinated to the 66th Mechanized Brigade, and in December was transferred to assault establishment. The unit received a new name that more accurately reflected the nature of its combat work: the 49th Separate Assault Battalion “Karpatska Sich.”

Then came Makiivka. Open terrain, dense enemy artillery, mine fields. The notorious “Kamikaze” position was completely destroyed by enemy fire. The cut-off group withdrew on foot under fire, but the wounded were carried out. This was the first forced retreat in the battalion’s combat history.

After several short rotations, the battalion found itself near Kupyansk. Enemy pressure was ferocious. Under those conditions, some foreign volunteers announced a desire to leave the unit. But the core remained and held the axis.

In spring 2024, the battalion was urgently redeployed to the Ocheretyne axis — to stabilize the front at a moment of breakthrough. Without a clear line of defense, amid the withdrawal of adjacent units. The unit conducted mobile defense, simulating the presence of larger forces, while reconnaissance groups identified enemy firing positions and coordinated their destruction before enemy advance.

The Toretsk Direction and New Tactics

After combat on the Ocheretyne axis, main efforts shifted to the Toretsk direction. Nelipivka became a firing line to support operations in New York (Novhorodske). The enemy struck with guided aerial bombs every fifteen to twenty minutes and advanced by infantry assaults in small groups under cover of continuous fire. The battalion’s tanks worked directly from positions within the built-up area of Nelipivka. The dominance of FPV drones made any movement during daylight impossible — all logistics and evacuation shifted to nighttime.

By mid-2025, the battalion held the line near Toretsk and conducted operations directly within the city: clearing operations, detection and destruction of enemy groups and firing positions. It became clear: the format of combat was changing. Vehicle approaches grew ever more dangerous, and the effectiveness of units increasingly depended on technological solutions.

The enemy systematically struck at logistics, and due to insufficient forces on the axis, the unit withdrew to the Dyliivka area, where intense fighting continued. Access to positions became critically limited — fighters entered on foot, covering significant distances. Supply and fire impact increasingly relied on unmanned systems — aerial and ground. Infantry focused on holding positions, observation, and targeting; fire impact on the enemy was increasingly delivered without direct contact.

Despite the difficult conditions and constant pressure, the battalion’s actions succeeded in holding back the enemy’s breakthrough attempts on this axis for an extended period.

On October 1, 2025, on the occasion of Defenders of Ukraine Day, the President of Ukraine presented the 49th Separate Assault Battalion “Karpatska Sich” with the unit’s combat flag — as a symbol of valor and honor displayed in battle. The flag was received on behalf of the battalion by battalion commander Major Yevhenii Skoryna.

The Kostiantynivka Direction: Today and Beyond

As of 2026, the 49th Separate Assault Battalion “Karpatska Sich” is carrying out its assigned tasks on the Kostiantynivka direction, defending the city of Kostiantynivka. The enemy operates in small groups, accumulates forces within urban structures, and attempts to advance further. The unit’s task is to detect and destroy such groups in a timely manner.

The vast majority of strikes, as well as demining operations, are carried out by the unit’s own unmanned systems elements. The battalion continues to hold the axis and repel the enemy’s attempts to capture the city.

On February 24, 2026, by Presidential Decree No. 141, the founder and first commander of the 49th Separate Assault Battalion “Karpatska Sich,” Oleh Kutsyn, call sign “Kum,” was posthumously awarded the title of Hero of Ukraine.
