Ukrainian Armed Forces have decided to reformate the reserve 61st Motorized Brigade into a unit specialized for forested and swampy terrain.

In order to strengthen the defence of the northern border of Ukraine (with Russia and Belarussia), a new brigade was created in Chernihiv Region. The 61st Motorized Brigade of 4th Reserve Corps Army was reformated into 61st Jager Infantry Brigade and transferred under the command of Armed Forces of Ukraine.

Jager Infantry is a light infantry and it focuses on combat in forested and swampy terrain. The name comes from the German word Jäger (trans. hunter), a term that the German military usually applies to light and highly-mobile infantry.

The brigade is the first of its kind in Ukraine.
