Frontline Situation Report – August 2024

Summary of the situation on the battlefield and the recap of the previous month.

Overall SITREP:

Ukrainian forces conducted a surprise offensive into Kursk oblast in Russia on August 6th, quickly taking Sudzha and neighboring villages, and controlling approximately 1000 km². Ukrainian forces lost substantial positions in the Pokrovsk and Selydove directions, with Russian forces entering Hrodivka, Novohrodivka and the outskirts of Selydove. Russian forces continue their exploitation in the Toretsk direction and managed to capture most of Niu-York, all of Pivnichne, and entering Toretsk itself.

Kursk axis

  • Ukrainian forces entered Kursk Oblast from multiple entry points along the border near Darino, Sverdlikovo and Gogolevka.
  • Russian forces were caught by surprise, and Ukrainian DRGs quickly advanced as far as Korenevo to the northwest, Giri to the south-east and Safonovka to the north.
  • Reports of Ukrainian control over Sudzha were rapid, however operational security remained tight, and it wasn’t until August 12th that Ukrainian forces were confirmed in the center of Sudzha.
  • Numerous Russian PoWs were captured in the first day, including many being marched towards Gogolevka, and also from a large bunker complex near Sverdlikovo where over 100 Russians were captured.
  • Russian forces quickly regrouped and reinforcements were sent, and Ukrainian forces were stopped at Giri and Safonovka after ambushes.

Kharkiv axis

  • On August 14th, Khartia Brigade posted footage of a Russian assault retaking positions west of Hlyboke.
  • Russian forces were geolocated back in Starytsya settlement on August 26th.

Kupyansk axis

  • Russian forces advanced into Synkivka, raising the flag over the school by August 29th.
  • Russian troops advanced a few treelines from Pischane securing the village, shown by footage on 28th August. They also advanced slightly southwest of Novoselivske by August 19th.
  • The enemy managed to reach Stelmakhivka and raise its flag there on August 30th.

Lyman axis

  • Russian forces were shown in at the Zherebets river in Makiivka on August 17th, showing a small advance.
  • Ukrainian 3rd Assault Brigade announced an offensive north of Makiivka towards Novovodiane on August 22nd.
  • Footage released on August 26th shows a small Ukrainian advance inside the Kreminna forest.

Siversk axis

  • Russian forces briefly occupied Spirne in footage released on August 26th, but appears to have been repulsed, with Ukrainian forces being shown in the settlement.
  • No other substantial changes here since Russian forces took Rozdolivka last month.

Bakhmut axis

  • Russian forces crossed the canal at Chasiv Yar but were repulsed by August 2nd.
  • A small Russian advance to the next treeline near Hryhorivka, and tactical advances near Klishchiivka were noted on August 13th.

Toretsk axis

  • Russian forces captured Pivnichne and were geolocated entering Toretsk from the east by August 21st. The high rises in eastern Toretsk were hit by Ukrainian drones, indicating deeper Russian advances by 28th August.
  • By August 19th Zalizne was entirely captured, with Russian forces entering Toretsk from the south, a second direction by the 23rd August.
  • Niu-York remains contested, though Russian forces advanced into the northern half raising a flag on a school on August 6th, with the 53rd Mechanized Brigade removing it by hand the next day.

Pokrovsk axis

  • Russian forces advanced substantially during August in the area taking advantage of the railway line, advancing from Prohres to Novohrodivka and onwards from there.
  • By August the 15th, Russian forces had entered Hrodivka and have continued their advance into the settlement.
  • By August 23rd, Russian forces had entered Novohrodivka, advancing rapidly via the rail line again. By August 27th, Russian forces had taken the entire town.
  • Advancing down the railway line and then southwards, the Russian flag was raised in Serhiivka (8th), Zhelanne (16th), Ptyche (22nd), Zavitne (23rd August). This rendered the Ukrainian positions east of Skuchne unviable, and Ukrainian forces pulled back significantly, losing many kilometers of fortifications.
  • Further Russian flag raises in Kalynove (27th), Memryk (28th), Karlivka (30th) and Halytsynivka (31st August) show substantial Russian progress towards the town of Selydove and also flanking the substantial Ukrainian defences near Karlivka, Nevelske and Krasnohorivka.

Novopavlivka axis

  • Russian forces attacked with substantial mechanized forces westwards towards Pobieda, Kostyantynivka and Vodyane, suffering substantial casualties. However, they did improve their positions significantly over the course of the month, taking multiple areas and treelines.
  • On August 27th, Russian forces raised their flag in the west of Kostyantynivka, confirming their control over the settlement.
  • By August 27th, Russian forces were geolocated raising the flag at the O0532 road east of Vodyane.
  • It is highly likely Vuhledar itself will come under attack during early September.

Velyka Novosilka axis

  • No significant changes in this area.

Kherson axis

  • No significant changes in this area.

The paradox is that while the Ukrainians managed to capture 907,5 km² in the Kursk region, Russia’s territorial gains in Ukraine were the highest this year (+ 359,67 km²)
