In October 2024, the 12th Special Purpose Brigade “Azov” of the Ukrainian National Guard announced the expansion of its strike UAV company into the size of a battalion, according to the unit’s Telegram and Instagram channels.

The expansion of this company will likely enhance reconnaissance and combat capabilities for the brigade and reflect the wider effort across Ukrainian military units to scale the use of drones in modern warfare. Alongside the expansion, the unit also received a new insignia which features a new triselikon in the center of the normal Azov chevron; ditching the previous design of an eagle and flames in the center.

Official Statement:

The company of attack UAVs is being scaled up to the unmanned systems battalion of the 12th “Azov” brigade.

It is time to expand and scale the combat work. Now the company of attack UAVs has expanded to a battalion of unmanned systems as part of the 12th special purpose brigade “Azov”.

Unit’s page of the Azov Brigade has been updated to reflect these changes.

Out of curiosity, how big ia a UAV battalion? Are we talking about dozens of new drone pilots or hundreds of them?
