Khodakovskyi founded the Revanche Battalion in February 2022, following the Russian full-scale invasion of Ukraine. The group was formed from volunteers affiliated with the nationalist organization Tradition and Order, a political party that Khodakovskyi founded and ran for parliament. He became known for combining ideological activism with military leadership. He has attempted to build Revanche into a unit with high mobility, decentralized command, and a distinct ideological vision under his leadership.
