54-а механізована бригада

54-а механізована бригада is a unit of the Ukrainian Сухопутні війська, formed in December 2014 as part of the expansion of the Armed Forces during the ongoing war in Donbas, and subordinated to the operational command “East”. From its inception, the brigade was garrisoned and operated in the Bakhmut area: during the ATO/JFO years, fighters of the brigade held defensive positions in the vicinity of Svitlodarsk, and took part in combat operations near Popasna, Avdiivka, Mariinka, and Krasnohorivka, and during 2017 in the liberation of Hladosove and Travneve.

The brigade was formed using battalions transferred from existing units. The 1st Mechanized Battalion was transferred from the 30-та механізована бригада, the 2nd Mechanized Battalion from the 24-та механізована бригада (formerly its 5th Battalion), and the 3rd Mechanized Battalion from the 17-та танкова бригада (formerly its 1st Battalion). In addition, the 25th Motorized Battalion “Kyivska Rus” was placed under the brigade’s command.
In 2016, the 3rd Tank Battalion “Zvirobiy” was also reassigned and reorganized into the regular line tank battalion of the brigade.
In 2018, the 46th Assault Battalion “Donbas-Ukraine” was subordinated to the the brigade.

In 2017, the brigade was awarded the honorary title in honor of Hetman Ivan Mazepa.
On December 6, 2022, the brigade was awarded the honorary distinction of the President of Ukraine “For Courage and Bravery”.

In November/December 2022, 46th Assault Battalion ceased to exist as a separate unit and became the third linear mechanized battalion of the brigade.

In late 2024, personnel from the famous 2nd Mechanized Battalion “K-2”, originally established in 2017 as a reconnaissance group and significantly expanded after the full-scale invasion of Ukraine, were separated from the brigade to form the core of the newly established 20th Unmanned Systems Regiment. Hero of Ukraine Kyrylo Veres and leader of the K-2 was appointed commander of the new unit. In 2025, полк було розширено до бригади і transferred from the Unmanned Systems про розширення Сухопутні війська до Сили безпілотних систем.

In August 2025, the 25th Rifle Battalion, which was formed in 2022 and attached to the brigade, was reformed as the 25-й окремий протитанковий батальйон, becoming 3-го армійського корпусу dedicated anti-tank unit.

With the reorganization of commands and the transition of the Armed Forces to a corps-brigade structure, в "The brigade became attached and lately assigned до 11-й армійський корпус, the oldest corps-level formation in the Ukrainian Army.

On December 27, 2025, following the rapid loss of ground in the Siversk front in northern Donetsk Oblast, Colonel Oleksiy Konoval was removed from the command of the brigade, and was later replaced by Colonel Vadym Cherniy, veteran of the 28-а механізована бригада and then deputy commander of the 5-а важка механізована бригада.
