Commander of 154th Mechanized Brigade Was Found Dead

On June 28, the commander of the 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, Volodymyr Kononnikov, was found dead. The circumstances surrounding his death are currently being established, and an official investigation is underway.

According to preliminary information, investigators found no signs of violent death. However, authorities emphasized that definitive conclusions will only be made after all forensic examinations and investigative procedures have been completed.

The brigade’s command stated that it is fully cooperating with law enforcement authorities and urged the media and the public to refrain from spreading unverified information out of respect for the privacy of the deceased’s family.

The 154th Separate Mechanized Brigade was established in September 2023 and was originally intended to participate in Ukraine’s planned 2024 offensive. Unlike many other newly formed brigades, it was built entirely from scratch rather than around an existing unit. During its initial formation, the brigade faced equipment shortages and partially relied on captured T-62 tanks and BRDM-2 armored reconnaissance vehicles to address capability gaps. Kononnikov led the brigade since 2025.
