501st Marine Battalion is a separate unit of the Marine Corps and under the command of 36th Marine Brigade. In 2014, as the result of annexation of Crimea by Russia, only 64 servicemen decided to return to Ukraine. During the Siege of Mariupol in 2022, the unit betrayed the rest of the brigade and voluntarily surrendered. The battalion had to be formed from scratch after the battle of Mariupol, and headquarters was relocated from Berdyansk to Mykolaiv.
