They got Popasna today, though.

I apologize for such a long post, but I want to explain in detail that the Wagner Group is not PMCs, but the Russian military. And I will describe it in detail. I have been interested in this topic for a long time, and have also taken a detailed interest (OSINT) in the topic of the events of February 7, 2018.

Visitors to this great site (thank you for regular updates, Jerome) might be interested in learning more about the Wagner Group and the fighting at Hisham.

In fact, there were also killed regular Russian forces there, at least that is very likely, since Special Operations Forces Command (KSSO/SSO) were deployed to the region ( /

And at least 215-217 Russians died there. Russian war criminal nationalist Igor Girkin (a.k.a. Strelkov) reported a huge figure of 600+ people. But this is probably an unrealistic figure, because it originally said in the briefing that “approximately a battalion-sized unit” was approaching (which the Coalition has observed since last week leading up to February 7, 2018).

Also former State Duma deputy and retired colonel Viktor Alksnis wrote in the morning of February 16 in his “Facebook” that according to unofficial information he received, 334 people were killed in Syria as a result of the clash on February 7:

“217 человек – 5-й штурмовой отряд, 10 человек – 2-й штурмовой отряд, 94 человека – штурмовой отряд “Весна”, 13 человек – артдивизион. Кроме того, большое количество раненых умерло и умирает от тяжелых ранений в госпиталях”. (

(sorry, don’t have a social media accounts, find this post yourself if you’re interested, text taken from the BBC Russian Service:

In addition, there were people who talked to the wounded personally and unofficially confirmed information that hundreds of armed Russians were killed there.

So the real one is to consider the 215-217 or 334 casualties, most of them Russian mercenaries from the Wagner Group (now called Liga (League)). In any case, a lot of Russian soldiers died there. Russia always hides its losses.

Now about who the Wagner Group is, de jure and de facto.

De jure. The international law prohibits ( PMCs to participate in hostilities. That’s why [De jure] they are mercenaries, not PMCs. Also, the laws in Russia prohibit PMCs, there are only PSCs (private security companies) and the maximum they do abroad is to guard the ships from pirates and the like.

De facto. But the Wagner Group is an unofficial unit of ‘mercenaries’ (again, not PMCs), which is under the auspices of ГУ МО РФ (or the Main Directorate of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation/MD MoD RF, CIA analog), formerly ГРУ МО РФ (GRU MoD RF) .

They train at the GU military base in the Ryazan region in Molkino. There is evidence that they had heavy armored vehicles (like BMP-2) and tanks (like T-62 and T-72) allocated by the Russian army. This is particularly evident in their participation in combat operations in Ukraine (main in 2015-2016, as far as I know). Also, they are always treated in military hospitals in Russia, not in civilian hospitals. Also former members of the Russian special forces, army and police (OMON, SOBR, police) serve there (rather than work, as in the PMCs).

This is important to keep in mind when we talk about Wagner Group/Liga.

It is also important to add that its founder is Dmitry Utkin, a Russian special forces soldier who fought in Chechnya during the Second Chechen War.

Until 2013, Mr. Utkin was commander of the 700th Detachment of Special Forces of the 2nd Detached Brigade of Special Forces of the Ministry of Defense (i.e. GRU).

So, technically speaking – they are the Russian military, just under a different cover, but legally they are not combatants, because they are not directly related to the Russian military.

And I agree that Putin wasn’t threatening anyone then, because unlike the weak Biden administration (which is still procrastinating on signing the Land-Lease bill when time is so precious to the Ukrainians) – the Trump administration has always been much tougher and more adamant about Russia.

I’m sure under Trump this war simply wouldn’t have happened.

Ukraine needs help as soon as possible.

And thanks to everyone who reads this comment for their attention. I hope I was able to give people more information on this event and reveal more about who the Wagner Group really is.

Thank you for your daily summary!

There seems to be a pause on both sides of the offensive. It’s not clear whether the Russian forces will be able to widen the gap around Popasna and continue to push into Donbass, or whether the Ukrainian forces will be able to launch a new offensive near Kharkiv.

But compared with the stalemate on the front lines, today’s parade at 10am Moscow time seems more important. Putin will make a speech that could lead to a major change in the war.It may be the beginning of the Russian national mobilization or the third phase of the Russian army’s operation.

There may also be some new action by NATO countries, it will be an important day anyway.

Depending on how Putin portrays the war to the Russian people will decide how NATO entities react.

US is the decider on most international thing ,dealing with war,we have the money and the manpower, because other abdicate their responsibility,US killed 100 of Russian in Syria, Russian did nothing, but burn the body Google Wagner Group Syria US Massacre

First this was mercenaries, second there is much disinformation about this event. Google “The Truth About the Russian Deaths in Syria”.

Are you serious providing this suppossedly real version od events for German newspaper from 2018?
Are you nuts believing Germans reports after so many proves they supported russians and Putin propaganda for so many years?
The worst thing is they still do the same waiting for Ukraine to loose war and get back to business with russia as before.
How can you expect that German press would at that time publish anything critical about russia and Putin. Please remember that in Germany press is closely following state politics, at least the mainstream media and till war in Ukraine.
Remember that Gerhard Schroeder and Olaf Scholz, both kanzlers from SPD (socialist party of Germany) cooperated with East German FDJ and took part in their symposia way before 1990, during cold war.

These were acting with orders from Moscow,a dead Russian has no value to Putin, unless they bring you too power,by Putin bombing his own people Google This American Life Putin

U mean the Wagner mercenaries with the nice tattoos? The ones fighting in Donbas since 2014? The ones Putin denied connections?

As I thought, the speech was a dud. Nothing to see here, move on.

Russian building trenches in the vicinity of Kozacha Lopan….why not just go back 4km ,across the border

it just logical
