It was established in 2025 in order to undertake the frontline responsibilities of \u041e\u043f\u0435\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0438\u0432\u043d\u0435 \u043a\u043e\u043c\u0430\u043d\u0434\u0443\u0432\u0430\u043d\u043d\u044f \u0421\u0445\u0456\u0434<\/a>, grouping together several Army Corps under its command. It is tasked with defending the south-eastern regions of Ukraine, predominantly in Donetsk Oblast.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

As part of its structure, it initally commanded the 9-\u0439<\/a>, 11-\u0439<\/a>, \u0456 20-\u0439 \u0430\u0440\u043c\u0456\u0439\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u0440\u043f\u0443\u0441<\/a> \u0421\u0443\u0445\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0445 \u0432\u0456\u0439\u0441\u044c\u043a \u0417\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0438\u0445 \u0441\u0438\u043b \u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0438.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It also became known that Brigadier General \u0414\u043c\u0438\u0442\u0440\u043e \u0411\u0440\u0430\u0442\u0456\u0448\u043a\u043e<\/a>, former commander of \u0422\u0430\u043a\u0442\u0438\u0447\u043d\u0430 \u0433\u0440\u0443\u043f\u0430 \"\u0417\u0430\u043f\u043e\u0440\u0456\u0436\u0436\u044f<\/a>, became the commander of the Task Force following the disbandment of his former unit in 2025. The Task Force left the control of 20-\u0439 \u0430\u0440\u043c\u0456\u0439\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u0440\u043f\u0443\u0441<\/a>, but gained command also of 19-\u0439 \u0430\u0440\u043c\u0456\u0439\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u0440\u043f\u0443\u0441<\/a>, 7th Rapid\u00a0Response Corps<\/a> \u0456 1-\u0439 \u043a\u043e\u0440\u043f\u0443\u0441 \u0410\u0437\u043e\u0432<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On April 2026, Bratishko was removed from the command of OC East and Operation Task Force East, being replaced by the commander of 20th Army Corps, Maj. Gen. Viktor Nikolyuk<\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, announced via his Telegram<\/a> channel that all Operational Strategic Groups (OSUV) and Operational Tactical Groups (OTU) of the Ground Forces have completed their missions and have been disbanded. Their responsibilities have been transferred to newly formed temporary command structures known as Operational Task Force units.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

These formations serve as combat extensions of the existing Operational Commands, which continue to function and remain responsible for logistics, troop training, and other support tasks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At present, there are five Operational Task Force units \u2014 West, North, South, East, and Kursk. They will be joined by a sixth, the Joint Forces Command, which will receive its own sector of the front and subordinate corps formations. The command is likely to be transferred from the General Staff to the Ground Forces to streamline the command hierarchy. The Joint Forces Command is led by former Ground Forces Commander Major General Mykhailo Drapatiy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

History of Operational Groups<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The history of Ukraine\u2019s temporary command structures dates back to 2014, following Russia\u2019s invasion of the Donbas and the creation of the so-called Sectors, which were later transformed into Operational Groups in 2016. After Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in 2022, the Ukrainian Army expanded with dozens of new combat brigades, increasing the need for additional operational groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All operational groups functioned as temporary military-administrative bodies, established specifically to command troops within active combat zones.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
