The brigade was formed on the basis of the 150-\u0442\u0430 \u043c\u0435\u0445\u0430\u043d\u0456\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0430 \u0431\u0440\u0438\u0433\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/a>.<\/p>\n

In 2024, units of the brigade were deployed across multiple sectors, units carried out combat missions in the Sumy and Kharkiv regions, as well as in the Donetsk region. During fighting in eastern Ukraine, brigade personnel took part in defensive operations in the area of Toretsk.<\/p>\n

During the same period, elements of the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade also operated in the Zaporizhzhia direction.<\/p>\n

Since the beginning of 2025, the brigade has been continuously engaged on the southern axis, particularly within the Kherson and Mykolaiv regions.<\/p>\n

The Ukrainian Naval Forces have formed the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade, marking the first coastal defense unit created within the Navy since Crimea's annexation. Before the annexation by Russia in 2014, Ukraine had the 36th Coastal Defense Brigade, though only parts of it remained loyal and returned to the mainland.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

According to unconfirmed reports at the time of writing this article, the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade was formed on the basis of the 150th Mechanized Brigade<\/a> of the 30th Marine Corps<\/a>. The new brigade has been assigned a new insignia, shown below. It remains unclear whether the brigade has been given a new military unit number or retains the previous one. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 150th Mechanized Brigade<\/a> was established in October 2023 during the summer 2023 conscription wave. The unit saw its first major deployment in Toretsk in 2024, where it suffered heavy casualties and lost its combat effectiveness. In December 2024, the brigade was reassigned to the Navy, becoming part of the 30th Marine Corps<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Russia's full-scale invasion, the Navy established the 360th Coastal Missile Brigade<\/a>, equipped with Neptun missile systems. On 30 December 2024, we reported<\/a> that the Ukrainian Navy had formed the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade<\/a>; which was allegedly formed based on the existing 150th Mechanized Brigade<\/a> of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. This marked the first creation of a coastal defense brigade since the Russian annexation of Crimea in 2014.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Recently, open-source information has shown that another coastal defense unit has appeared - the 34th Coastal Defense Brigade<\/strong>. The unit also appears to have received an insignia, which shows a crab with red eyes alongside the traditional Marine Corps chevron style.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It has been reported - although unconfirmed, that the brigade was formed on the basis of the 124th Territorial Defense Brigade<\/a>. We reported<\/a> on 22 June 2024 that the brigade joined the Marine Corps, being the second territorial defense unit to do so. It is expected that the 126th Territorial Defense Brigade<\/a> will also be reformed into a coastal defense brigade in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On the Day of the Marine Corps of Ukraine, President Volodymyr Zelenskyy met with service members and their families, presented the nation\u2019s highest state awards, and bestowed combat flags, Ribbons of the Order of Courage and Bravery, and a ribbon for an honorary title to unit commanders.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The President highlighted Ukraine\u2019s pride in the 35th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Ostrogradsky, the 36th Separate Marine Brigade named after Rear Admiral Mykhailo Bilynsky, the 37th and 38th Separate Marine Brigades\u2014with the latter bearing the name of Hetman Petro Sahaidachny\u2014as well as all units of the 30th Marine Corps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volodymyr Zelenskyy presented battle flags to the commanders of the 40th Coastal Defense Brigade and the 67th Artillery Battalion of the 406th Artillery Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Ukrainian Marine Corps, operating under the Ukrainian Navy, has announced a comprehensive reform process affecting all coastal defense brigades under its command \u2014 namely the 34th, 39th, and 40th Coastal Defense Brigades.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All three formations were established just over a year ago. They originated from two Territorial Defense Brigades and one Mechanized Brigade that had been transferred to the 30th Marine Corps and subsequently reorganized. The 40th Coastal Defense Brigade, formed on the basis of the 150th Mechanized Brigade, became the first coastal defense brigade created within the Ukrainian Armed Forces since 2015.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the time of their formation, these brigades were widely assessed as hybrid structures, combining elements of mechanized and marine units. Their role appeared primarily defensive, with a focus on protecting critical infrastructure and maintaining security along riverine and coastal lines.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Restructuring<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On March 1, 2026, all three brigades were officially redesignated as Marine Brigades<\/strong>, increasing the total number of active Marine Brigades from four to seven. The Marines outlined that the doctrines of these units have now changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Marine Brigade's are often associated with being rapid-response forces and designed for offensive amphibious assault operations, in contrast to Coastal Defense Brigades. In practice, however, under conditions of active combat, Coastal Defense Brigades often perform missions on par with Marines. According to the announcement, these units have already proven in battle that they deserve Marine status.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

With immediate effect, it was stated that these brigade's would expand their personnel structure, creating more positions and opportunities within the brigade, and undergo certain changes with their armament and training. Soldiers of these brigade's would now also undergo preparation for specialized, amphibious assault operations, ranging from landing from ships, boats, and helicopters, and greater training in crossing water obstacles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Additionally, the 34th Coastal Defense Brigade<\/a>, now the 34th Marine Brigade<\/strong>, has received a new insignia as part of its reformation. This now appears in a higher-quality rendition released first on Mi<\/em>litaryLand<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The insignia depicts a chevron bearing the distinctive colors of the Ukrainian Marines. At its center is a stylized depiction of what appears to be a Lynx's head, rendered in a grey-silver tone.
