9th Unmanned Systems Brigade is a unit of the Unmanned Systems Forces. The unit was created in 2014 as 9th Battalion of Territorial Defense “Vinnytsia”. In October 2014, the battalion was reformed as 9th Motorized Battalion and assigned to 30-\u0442\u0430 \u043c\u0435\u0445\u0430\u043d\u0456\u0437\u043e\u0432\u0430\u043d\u0430 \u0431\u0440\u0438\u0433\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/a>, later to 59-\u0442\u0430 \u043e\u043a\u0440\u0435\u043c\u0430 \u043c\u043e\u0442\u043e\u043f\u0456\u0445\u043e\u0442\u043d\u0430 \u0431\u0440\u0438\u0433\u0430\u0434\u0430<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

On March 9, 2022, the battalion\u2019s commander Serhii Kotenko, who had led the unit since 2015, was killed in action near Zaporizhzhia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In January 2025, following the\u00a0reorganization of 59th Motorized Brigade into an assault brigade<\/a> and the reassignement from the\u00a0\u0421\u0443\u0445\u043e\u043f\u0443\u0442\u043d\u0456 \u0432\u0456\u0439\u0441\u044c\u043a\u0430<\/a>\u00a0\u0434\u043e\u00a0\u0421\u0438\u043b\u0438 \u0431\u0435\u0437\u043f\u0456\u043b\u043e\u0442\u043d\u0438\u0445 \u0441\u0438\u0441\u0442\u0435\u043c<\/a>, the newest branch of the\u00a0\u0417\u0431\u0440\u043e\u0439\u043d\u0456 \u0441\u0438\u043b\u0438 \u0423\u043a\u0440\u0430\u0457\u043d\u0438<\/a>, the battalion left the structure of the brigade<\/a>\u00a0and formed the core of the newly established 9th Unmanned Systems Brigade, under the command of Lieutenant Colonel Bohdan Harnaha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Among other units, the brigade includes Ukraine\u2019s first all-female UAS unit, \u201cHarpies,\u201d as well as the \u201c\u041a\u0430\u0432\u043a\u0430\u0437\u044c\u043a\u0438\u0439 \u043b\u0435\u0433\u0456\u043e\u043d<\/a>\u201d, a unit composed of natives of the Caucasus fighting on the side of Ukraine. The 9th Motorized Battalion of the 59th Assault Brigade has been expanded into a brigade, as announced on the brigade's official social media channels<\/a>. The newly formed brigade has separated from the 59th Assault Brigade and now operates directly under the command of the Unmanned Systems Forces Command. The recent change in the unit's insignia is likely linked to its expansion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 9th Brigade was initially established in 2014 as the 9th Battalion of Territorial Defense \"Vinnytsia\" and took part in the defense of Novoazovsk that same year. In October 2014, it was reorganized into a motorized battalion and placed under the command of the 30th Mechanized Brigade. On April 22, 2015, the battalion was reassigned to the 59th Mechanized Brigade. On March 9, 2022, Serhii Kotenko, who had commanded the battalion since 2015, was killed near Zaporizhzhia.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change follows the recently announced reorganization of the 59th Motorized Brigade. Two units from across the Ukrainian military have recently been integrated into the newly expanded 9th Unmanned Systems Brigade<\/a>, which forms part of the Unmanned Systems Forces. One of the units previously belonged to the Marines, while the other was part of the Main Intelligence Directorate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Caucasian Legion joins <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

On June 20, 2025, the Caucasian Legion<\/a> announced that they had joined the brigade. The unit predominantly consists of volunteers from the Caucasus region, mainly of Georgian origin. The unit was previously part of the 80th Air Assault Brigade<\/a>, which they had joined at some point during 2024, and began to transition heavily over to unmanned system platforms, predominantly drones. In February 2025, it became known that the unit had joined the 18th Marine Battalion<\/a> and had been carrying out combat missions in Donetsk Oblast. The unit was officially welcomed<\/a> into the brigade on July 12, 2025, by the commander, Lt. Col. Bohdan Harnaha.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sonechko Battalion joins <\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to the Telegram of the brigade, the Sonechko Battalion, previously part of the Tymur Special Unit<\/a> under the Main Intelligence Directorate<\/a>, has officially joined the brigade. This was also shown with the commander congratulating the unit on the transfer. The unit has existed since 2014, taking part in many crucial battles throughout the war in Donbas and the full-scale invasion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
