225th Assault Battalion announced on social media<\/a> that it has received 1A3 Marder infantry fighting vehicles. This makes it the second unit within the Ground Forces, and the fourth unit overall, to receive these vehicles. The 225th Assault Battalion, renowned for its operations in Kursk Oblast, has been expanded into a regiment. This was revealed by several volunteers affiliated with the unit a few days ago and later confirmed by the regiment's commander, Capt. Oleh Shiryaev, on his Instagram<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yesterday, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy visited<\/a> the headquarters of the 225th Assault Regiment<\/a> \u2014 the unit credited with being the first to enter Russia\u2019s Kursk Oblast last year. During the visit, the regiment\u2019s commander, Major Oleh Shiryaev, formally requested that the unit be expanded into a full brigade. In response, Zelenskyy promised to raise the matter with the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, General Oleksandr Sirskyi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 225th is not the only unit under consideration for expansion. The 425th Assault Regiment<\/a> \"Skala\" is also reportedly set to be elevated to brigade level in the near future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Loyalty Above All<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Since General Sirskyi assumed leadership of the Ukrainian Armed Forces in 2023, a noticeable shift has occurred in how resources and recognition are distributed within the army. Loyalty \u2014 not just performance \u2014 has become a determining factor.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 225th and 425th regiments have indeed proven themselves as highly effective combat units. But part of their success stems from the preferential treatment they receive. These units were handpicked by Sirskyi, given Western equipment, prioritized for mobilized reinforcements, and generally well-supported \u2014 all in return for their unwavering execution of orders and public support for the general\u2019s leadership.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sirskyi is known to personally visit these units on the front lines, often appearing in photos and videos where he is warmly received by the troops. These visits serve both morale and public relations.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

However, this favoritism has bred resentment elsewhere in the military. Units that raise concerns, question orders \u2014 especially when doing so to preserve the lives of their soldiers \u2014 are often met with punitive measures. In many cases, this begins with an internal audit of the brigade and ends with the dismissal of its commander.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Notably, only a few units are immune from this dynamic \u2014 namely the 3rd Assault Brigade<\/a> and the National Guard\u2019s Azov Brigade<\/a>. Their popularity and combat record make them too politically and publicly influential to be subjected to such retribution.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The New Army on the rise<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The expansion of select assault regiments into brigades marks the emergence of a new Ukrainian Army \u2014 one increasingly shaped by loyalty and political favor. But this transformation comes at the expense of veteran units that have been holding the line since the early days of the full-scale invasion in 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Many of Ukraine\u2019s mechanized brigades, especially those formed before invasion, are now severely depleted. Some operate at just 30% of their intended manpower, such as 30th Mechanized Brigade<\/a> and 72nd Mechanized Brigade<\/a>. They rely heavily on pre-war stockpiles, captured enemy vehicles, and civilian donations to stay operational. Unlike the favored assault units, these brigades often find themselves under scrutiny. The Ukrainian Army has established a new type of troops, the Assault Forces, which unites all assault regiments under a single command. Previously, these regiments were part of the Mechanized Troops of Ukraine and reported directly to the Commander-in-Chief, General Oleksandr Sirskyi.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Valentyn Manko, commander of the 33rd Assault Regiment, has been appointed as the head of the newly formed Assault Troops. It should not be mistaken for the Air Assault Forces, which remain a distinct type of forces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

What is a type of troops?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

A type of troops can be defined as a group of units organized by their designated purpose and placed under a unified command. These units report directly to their commander, while the entire group is subordinated to the Commander-in-Chief. They exist outside the standard army hierarchy. For example, Army Aviation falls into this category.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About Manko<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Colonel Valentyn Manko, a Hero of Ukraine, previously served as commander of the 33rd Assault Regiment before his new appointment. In 2014, he sold his agricultural machinery to purchase military equipment and formed a volunteer unit within the Right Sector. He took part in several key battles, including Ilovaisk, Donetsk Airport, and Debaltseve. Following Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in 2022, he once again created a volunteer unit, which later became the 33rd Assault Battalion and eventually expanded into a regiment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Composition<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

The newly formed type of troops consists of five assault regiments: the 1st, 33rd, 210th, 225th, and 425th.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
