His view attributed these shortcomings to the failures within the leadership of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, being unable to effectively develop and employ these units.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Furthermore, the 2nd International Legion was also subordinated to the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/16th-army-corps\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"45510\">16th Army Corps<\/a>, as <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/news\/2nd-international-legion-joins-kharkiv-corps\/\" data-type=\"post\" data-id=\"66128\">reported by <em>MilitaryLand<\/em><\/a>, indicating a shift in effort to place the unit within a permanent command structure and defined area of responsibility, employing their use more effectively under the corps-level leadership formed largely from officers of the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/92nd-mechanized-brigade\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"15636\">92nd Assault Brigade<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The constant uneven development of these battalions made it difficult for them to develop beyond their chronic problems of fatigue, casualties, and a lack of manpower, also burdened by the fact that they were not integrated into a proper or permanent command structure promptly, making it difficult for them to plead their case to continue existing as a separate unit.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:kadence\/advancedheading {\"uniqueID\":\"73801_9b2cd9-00\",\"markBorder\":\"\",\"markBorderStyles\":[{\"top\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"right\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"bottom\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"left\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"unit\":\"px\"}],\"tabletMarkBorderStyles\":[{\"top\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"right\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"bottom\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"left\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"unit\":\"px\"}],\"mobileMarkBorderStyles\":[{\"top\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"right\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"bottom\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"left\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"unit\":\"px\"}]} -->\n<h2 class=\"kt-adv-heading73801_9b2cd9-00 wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading73801_9b2cd9-00\">Disbandments and Reassignments<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:kadence\/advancedheading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>On December 9, 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/articles\/2025\/12\/09\/8010990\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/articles\/2025\/12\/09\/8010990\/\"><em>Ukrainska Pravda<\/em> reported<\/a> the first formation to be reassigned, being the 1st International Legion. It was reported that this battalion would be transferred under the command of the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/475th-assault-regiment\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"41304\">475th Assault Regiment<\/a>, one of the newer assault units that had been expanded from a battalion in August 2025, <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/news\/code-9-2-grows-from-battalion-to-regiment\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/news\/code-9-2-grows-from-battalion-to-regiment\/\">reported <\/a>by <em>MilitaryLand<\/em>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The reporting also clarified that the 475th Assault Regiment is currently under the jurisdiction of the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/command-of-the-ground-forces\/\">Command of the Ukrainian Ground Forces<\/a>. While the formation of dedicated <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/assault-troops\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"64242\">Assault Troops<\/a> has <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/news\/creation-of-assault-troops-in-the-ukrainian-army\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/news\/creation-of-assault-troops-in-the-ukrainian-army\/\">commenced<\/a>, they have not yet been officially established, meaning all assault formations remain as they are present. This was also brought up during an <a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/yCKwOOzQJvM\">interview shared<\/a> by the regiment on their YouTube channel.<br><br>According to a senior source within the regiment, he also stated that the transfer process was proceeding smoothly for the foreigners.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:kadence\/image {\"align\":\"center\",\"id\":72407,\"sizeSlug\":\"medium_large\",\"link\":\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot_40.png\",\"linkDestination\":\"media\",\"uniqueID\":\"73801_25fb7a-31\"} -->\n<div class=\"wp-block-kadence-image kb-image73801_25fb7a-31\"><figure class=\"aligncenter size-medium_large\"><a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot_40.png\" class=\"kb-advanced-image-link\"><img src=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/12\/Screenshot_40-768x428.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"kb-img wp-image-72407\"\/><\/a><figcaption><em>Foreign volunteers of Bravo Company, 1st International Legion, conducting small-arms training on a firing range, note the differences of weaponry, June 26, 2024.<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure><\/div>\n<!-- \/wp:kadence\/image -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Later, on December 19, 2025, it was <a href=\"https:\/\/zn.ua\/ukr\/war\/ne-treba-rozvaljuvati-te-shcho-pratsjuje-internatsionalnij-lehion.html\">reported by <em>Dzerkalo Tyzhnia<\/em><\/a> that the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/3rd-special-purpose-battalion\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"23885\">3rd International Legion<\/a>, also known as the <strong>3rd Special Purpose Battalion of the International Legion<\/strong>, had also been reassigned, likely also to the 475th Assault Regiment, making it the second unit to be disbanded. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>According to the same report, the initial plans for the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/4th-international-legion\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"23891\">4th International Legion<\/a> were to transfer it to the new assault formation; however, <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/news\/international-legion-training-unit-reformed\/\">it was reformed<\/a> as a separate training centre responsible for the preparation of foreign volunteers and stateless persons.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The process of transfer also appears to be, in fact, facing many difficulties. Reportedly, there is little willingness among foreign volunteers in these line battalions to transfer into assault formations, with <a href=\"https:\/\/zn.ua\/ukr\/war\/ne-treba-rozvaljuvati-te-shcho-pratsjuje-internatsionalnij-lehion.html\">figures <\/a>put at only a small percentage of 10 to 20% of the foreigners completing the transition from each battalion. As reported by the <em>Kyiv Independent<\/em>, many of the Legion's personnel remain hesitant and fearful of their integration into assault formations, which holds mixed reputations among both foreign and Ukrainian servicemembers.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The dissolution of an umbrella formation, being the International Legion, will also continue to fragment and complicate the recruitment process for prospective foreign volunteers. The process already requires great amounts of individual initiative to navigate multiple avenues of joining several units across different branches. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The absence of a single, clearly defined point of contact for foreign applicants may also negatively impact the recruitment process, with people unsure on which unit they are joining and the implications of doing so.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>It is reasonable to question whether the International Legion outlived its necessity. While opinions vary regarding its combat effectiveness and long-term necessity, it served an important role in the early phase of the conflict, providing an entry point for hundreds of foreign volunteers.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Following its disbandment, experienced personnel are expected to be absorbed by other formations actively recruiting foreigners. This is already evident within the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/3rd-army-corps\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"44237\">3rd Army Corps<\/a> and the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/main-intelligence-directorate\/a3449\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"20790\">International Legion of the Defense Intelligence of Ukraine<\/a>. Illustrating a shift away from a centralised foreign volunteer structure towards integration across various units of different scales.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Regardless of the varying assessments of its performance, the unit provided combat experience to hundreds, and possibly thousands of volunteers, helping to shape the evolving role of foreigners in Ukraine. As such, it will be remembered as one of the most prominent volunteer formations in modern history. In an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/articles\/2025\/12\/09\/8010990\/\" data-type=\"link\" data-id=\"https:\/\/www.pravda.com.ua\/articles\/2025\/12\/09\/8010990\/\">interview with <em>Ukrainska Pravda<\/em><\/a>, Lieutenant Colonel Andriy Spivak, the battalion's deputy commander argued - that the unit was experimenting with light infantry tactics combined with drone operations, a concept approved by the then Commander of the Ukrainian Ground Forces, <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/commanders\/mykhailo-drapatyi\/\" data-type=\"commander\" data-id=\"72672\">Mykhailo Drapatyi<\/a>, in January 2025.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\"<em>We are the only military unit in the Armed Forces that is testing changes in the tactics of light infantry operations \u2013 that is, the bread and salt of the entire army. We are working on an organic combination of drones and infantry operations.<\/em>\"<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph --><\/blockquote>\n<!-- \/wp:quote -->\n\n<!-- wp:quote -->\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote\"><!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>\"<em>The concept was approved by the commander of the Ground Forces, Drapatiy, in January of this year. Under this concept, we developed programs, spent money, and engaged the best instructors of the Ground Forces at the training grounds \u2013 to train both infantry and UAV crews. The integration of light infantry and drone tactics for military operations has been a concept widely explored since the first year of the full-scale invasion, used in many roles. Additionally, many units have scaled far beyond anything that the battalion could handle itself, and has seen far more success and utilization on the frontline for many years.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The potential impact on foreign recruitment however remains more of a valid concern, as the International Legion was long recognized as an entry point for foreign volunteers, even though an increasing number of highly-experienced, well-renowned units have opened up recruitment to foreigners in recent years. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>As the year came to a close, the battalion was formally disbanded on <strong>December 31, 2025<\/strong>, along with the rest of the International Legion under the Ukrainian Ground Forces, beginning its transition into new formations.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:kadence\/advancedheading {\"uniqueID\":\"78128_7e884e-2b\",\"markBorder\":\"\",\"markBorderStyles\":[{\"top\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"right\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"bottom\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"left\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"unit\":\"px\"}],\"tabletMarkBorderStyles\":[{\"top\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"right\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"bottom\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"left\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"unit\":\"px\"}],\"mobileMarkBorderStyles\":[{\"top\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"right\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"bottom\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"left\":[null,\"\",\"\"],\"unit\":\"px\"}]} -->\n<h2 class=\"kt-adv-heading78128_7e884e-2b wp-block-kadence-advancedheading\" data-kb-block=\"kb-adv-heading78128_7e884e-2b\">Transition into Assault Forces<\/h2>\n<!-- \/wp:kadence\/advancedheading -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Confirmation of the battalion's reassignment first emerged on February 10, 2026, with a <a href=\"https:\/\/i-ua.tv\/news\/94307-v-ukraini-ne-vidbulosia-i-ne-vidbuvaietsia-likvidatsiia-internatsionalnykh-pidrozdiliv-myroshnychenko\">report <\/a>based on information given by Ruslan Myroshnychenko, founder and former commander of the 2nd International Legion, stated that the unit had been integrated into the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/253rd-territorial-defense-battalion\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"18790\">253rd Assault Regiment<\/a>.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>This development contradicted earlier assumptions that the battalion would be possibly reassigned to the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/armed-forces\/475th-assault-regiment\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"41304\">475th Assault Regiment<\/a>, like the two other battalions inside of the Legion's umbrella. This was due to the fact that only a limited number of foreign volunteers from these battalions had transferred, with <a href=\"https:\/\/zn.ua\/ukr\/war\/ne-treba-rozvaljuvati-te-shcho-pratsjuje-internatsionalnij-lehion.html\">estimates suggesting<\/a> that just 10 to 20% of personnel from either unit completed the transition, with the rest abandoning their contracts to join other units, or leave the country entirely.<\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>The integration of the battalion with the 253rd Assault Regiment, which traces its origins to the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/volunteer-army\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"11761\">Ukrainian Volunteer Army<\/a>, is a unique one. The Ukrainian Volunteer Army emerged from the former founder of Right Sector and the <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/ukraine\/ukrainian-volunteer-corps\/\" data-type=\"unit\" data-id=\"31864\">Ukrainian Volunteer Corps<\/a>, which housed very small numbers of foreigners since the beginning of hostilities in Donbas in 2014. It is formally designated as the <strong>3rd Infantry Battalion<\/strong>, but informally known as the <strong>International Legion Infantry Battalion<\/strong> as part of the regiment. The battalion will be responsible for securing newly captured ground and maintaining control of the line, whereas assault units are responsible for storming and advancing on enemy positions. <\/p>\n<!-- \/wp:paragraph -->\n\n<!-- wp:paragraph -->\n<p>Additionally, with the battalion being integrated into the regiment, a new commander has also been assigned to replace the former battalion commander, Major <a href=\"https:\/\/militaryland.net\/commanders\/oleksandr-yakymovych\/\" data-type=\"commander\" data-id=\"51834\">Oleksandr Yakymovych<\/a>.
