Its formation incorporated three former volunteer territorial defense battalions: the 9th, 10th, and 11th battalions. In 2022, it stood as the sole Ground Forces unit defending the Kherson Oblast against Russian invasion forces. By 2024, a breakaway group from the Da Vinci Wolves unit formed the 108th Mechanized Battalion, operating under the brigade's command.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
According to Yuriy Butusov, editor-in-chief of Ukrainian censor.net, the 59th Brigade experienced significant losses following the appointment of Bohdan Shevchuk as brigade commander in February 2024. In July 2024, paramedic Kateryna Polishchuk publicly urged<\/a> President Zelenskyy to initiate a criminal investigation against Shevchuk, citing allegations of inhumane treatment of soldiers and substantial casualties under his leadership. Commander Oleksandr Syrskyi subsequently ordered an inspection of the brigade, which concluded without identifying any issues.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
This marks the second unit to recently depart from the structure of the Ground Forces. The 9th Brigade was initially established in 2014 as the 9th Battalion of Territorial Defense \"Vinnytsia\" and took part in the defense of Novoazovsk that same year. In October 2014, it was reorganized into a motorized battalion and placed under the command of the 30th Mechanized Brigade. On April 22, 2015, the battalion was reassigned to the 59th Mechanized Brigade. In February, the Ministry of Defense of Ukraine officially launched the \"Contract 18-24\" project<\/a>. This is a voluntary initiative for Ukrainians aged 18-24 who are ready to join the Defense Forces for one year. After determining the candidate's suitability for military service, the commander of the military unit signs a one-year contract with them. A mandatory condition of the contract is direct participation in combat operations in areas of military (combat) action.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After signing the contract, the commander issues an order appointing the candidate to the selected or proposed vacant position and officially enlists them in the military unit, providing all necessary support and resources. Additionally, within three working days, the commander must inform the head of the Territorial Recruitment and Social Support Center, where the individual is registered for military service, as well as their employer, about their enlistment. Once the contract is signed and the service member begins fulfilling their duties, the first installment of the financial reward\u2014200,000 UAH (~4,470 EUR)\u2014is paid within five working days.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
After signing the contract, the recruit is sent for intensive training, which includes:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

- Specialized training<\/strong> \u2013 14 days<\/li>\n\n\n\n
- Adaptation course within the military unit<\/strong> \u2013 14 days<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n\n\n
After completing training and adaptation, the service member begins duty in the selected unit. From this moment, they are assigned to combat (or special) tasks, which is confirmed by a separate order from the unit commander. Based on this order, the second installment of the financial reward\u2014300,000 UAH (~6,700 EUR)\u2014is paid. During service, the service member also receives a monthly salary according to their position, along with additional payments for direct participation in combat operations. Upon completion of the one-year contract and issuance of the order for removal from the personnel list, the service member, provided all contractual obligations have been fulfilled, receives the final installment of the financial reward\u2014500,000 UAH (~11,175 EUR). From this moment, they gain the right to apply for a preferential mortgage with a \"zero\" interest rate, as well as the right to travel abroad freely.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The volunteer also decides for themselves whether to continue service or return to civilian life. The law guarantees exemption from mobilization for 12 months after the completion of the military contract.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Units supporting the initiative<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Volunteers can pick which unit to join, and the initiative gradually expands to more Ukrainian units. The following units currently accept volunteers from the Contract 18-24 initiative.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The change of brigade commander occurred on May 15\u201316. According to Ukrainska Pravda, the decision to remove Bohdan Shevchuk was not made by Vadym Sukharevskyi, the Commander of the Unmanned Systems Forces (under whose command the 59th Brigade has been since early 2025), but directly by the Commander-in-Chief, Oleksandr Syrskyi. However, Sukharevskyi reportedly also had strained relations with Shevchuk.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
The reasons for the sudden replacement of the brigade commander have not yet been officially disclosed. Oleksandr Sak was, until just a few days ago, commander of the 53rd Mechanized Brigade<\/a>. He led the brigade since November 2024, as MilitaryLand reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n
Bohdan Shevchuk<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Lieutenant Colonel Bohdan Shevchuk, born in 1992, is a Ukrainian military officer who has held several key leadership roles during the ongoing war. He began his service as a company commander in the 132nd Reconnaissance Battalion, later advancing to the position of deputy battalion commander. In 2023, he assumed command of a battalion within the 68th Jaeger Brigade. By February 2024, he was appointed as the commander of the 59th Assault Brigade, then designated as a Motorized Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Shevchuk\u2019s leadership has been the subject of significant controversy, particularly following the loss of Krasnohorivka and nearby strategic positions under his command. While described by some as a young and energetic officer, critics\u2014including soldiers who served under him\u2014argued that he lacked the experience necessary to command a brigade-level unit. President Zelenskyy has appointed Brigadier General Hennadii Shapovalov as the new Commander of the Ground Forces. The appointment was announced in Decree No. 412\/2025<\/a>, published on the official presidential website. Hennadii Shapovalov was born in 1978 in the Kirovohrad region. He graduated from the Institute of Tank Troops at Kharkiv State University, the Command and Staff Institute for Troop Employment at the National Defense University, the National University of Ostroh Academy, and the U.S. Army War College.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
He served at all levels of military service, starting as a tank platoon commander and becoming the commander of the 59th Motorized Brigade<\/a> in 2019. In 2021, he headed the Main Directorate for Military Cooperation of the Armed Forces. In 2024, he was appointed commander of the Strategic Group Tavria<\/a>, and later that same year, he became the commander of Operational Command South<\/a>.
