MilitaryLand has obtained new information about the recently established 16th Army Corps of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. The corps is now confirmed to be headquartered in Kharkiv, a major city in eastern Ukraine. It has been assigned the motto \u201cAdvance, Not Retreat\u201d and designated with the military unit number A5147. The 16th Army Corps is expected to take over the responsibilities previously handled by Tactical Group Kharkiv<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The structure<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

According to sources, the 16th Army Corps now commands six brigades. As previously reported, the corps is centered around the battle-hardened 92nd Assault Brigade. It also comprises the 57th and 58th Motorized Brigades, along with one tank brigade, one mechanized brigade, and reinforced by one territorial defense brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Sources indicate that the 41st Mechanized Brigade is also expected to be part of the 16th Army Corps. However, as previously reported on June 4<\/a>, the 41st Mechanized Brigade had joined the 12th Army Corps. It is possible that the brigade has since been reassigned from the 12th to the 16th Army Corps, but this has not yet been confirmed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 3rd Tank Brigade is departing from the 11th Army Corps<\/a>, making the 16th Army Corps the first newly formed corps to include a dedicated tank brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Our sources report that the organization of all army corps in the Ground Forces remains a work in progress. The core units for each corps have been set, but some brigades are still being redistributed among various corps. All separate motorized battalions under the command of the 57th Motorized Brigade have been reorganized into linear formations. This was revealed by our research and later confirmed on the brigade\u2019s official Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 17th Motorized Battalion has become the brigade\u2019s 1st Motorized Battalion. The 34th Motorized Battalion was reorganized into the 2nd Motorized Battalion, while the 42nd Motorized Battalion is now the 3rd Motorized Battalion. As a result, the separate battalions ceased to exist as independent entities, losing their support units, command structures, and other means of autonomous operation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

All three battalions were originally formed in April 2014 under the law \u201cOn the Defense of Ukraine.\u201d<\/em> They were created as territorial volunteer formations during the partial mobilization prompted by Russia\u2019s annexation of Crimea and the outbreak of war in the Donbas. In total, 34 such battalions were raised. By 2015, most territorial defense battalions were partially demobilized; those that proved effective in combat were incorporated into newly formed brigades, such as the 57th Motorized Brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Following Russia\u2019s full-scale invasion in February 2022, all three battalions lost their garrisons, as their headquarters were located in areas of Kherson Oblast that are now under occupation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The last separate unit under the brigade\u2019s command, the 9th Rifle Battalion, was reorganized into the 9th Reconnaissance Battalion in August 2025 and detached from the brigade\u2019s structure. As of today, the 57th Motorized Brigade consists solely of linear units. The status of the 117th Assault Battalion remains unknown, as it has not been observed since its deployment to Kharkiv Oblast in May 2024.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n

About 57th Motorized Brigade<\/h2>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n\n

The 57th Motorized Brigade was formed in the fall of 2014, and included three separated motorized battalions under its command - 17th, 34th, and 42nd. The unit participated was deployed numerous times to Donbas, and participated in the battle of Debaltseve. The brigade's command was garrisoned in Nova Kakhovka of Kherson Oblast, and the formation lost its base following the Russian full-scale invasion in February 2022. A new commander has been appointed to lead the 57th Motorized Brigade of the 16th Army Corps, according to an official press release issued by the brigade.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Colonel Yevhen Solodayev, who had commanded the unit since June 2025, formally handed over the brigade\u2019s battle flag to its new leader, Lieutenant Colonel Vitaly Popovich.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Solodayev previously replaced Oleksandr Bakulin, who at the time was appointed commander of the 19th Army Corps. During his tenure, Solodayev oversaw the brigade\u2019s transition to a linear structure and played an active role in its development.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

About the new commander<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Research by MilitaryLand shows that Lieutenant Colonel Vitaly Popovich volunteered to join the Armed Forces after seeing news reports about the battles for Ilovaisk and Donetsk Airport. After completing training at one of the Armed Forces\u2019 training centers, he was assigned to the 93rd Mechanized Brigade as a machine-gun platoon commander. The brigade was then responsible for defending the Butivka mine near Avdiivka. Within months, Popovich was promoted to company commander and took charge of the mine\u2019s defense.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In December 2016, a tragedy struck his company: a serviceman killed a fellow soldier, attempted to steal a BMP-2, and planned to defect. He was detained but managed to disclose the Defense Forces\u2019 positions. Following these events, Popovich left active service and moved to the reserve, later joining the Naftogaz company, where he worked until 2022.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

After Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Popovich returned to military service.
